Paul’s Jam @ The Barn concluded it’s seventh year with a rousing evening of music from a variety of performers from young Wes Devil’s Metal to 83-year-old maestro Git Shorty’s precise guitar picking, and ending with an epic jam that involved nearly every musician in attendance.

Paul’s Jam provides opportunities for musicians to demonstrate their abilities at the area’s most popular venue for live music. Hosted by musician/promoter Paul Quinn, Paul’s Jam is held each second Thursday of the month since January 2017.

Paul’s Jam @ The Barn has established itself as an opportunity for new talent to be discovered and new bands to win a following. Performers gain exposure via Facebook Live on The Barn’s page, photos posted to The Barn’s page and to PQ’s Rock n Roll Circus page on Facebook, and “BarnTV” (The Barn’s YouTube channel).

Musicians also have opportunity to win over The Barn management and patrons. Several performers have parlayed performances at the jam into new friends, followers and gigs. Representatives from several venues routinely turn up to Paul’s Jam to check out the talent for possible hire.

The open jam now routinely draws performers from Cambridge to Columbus, Ohio, and points between.

During the jam’s seventh season, Paul’s Jam hosted dozens of musicians from throughout the region including newcomers to The Barn stage:

Jay Bond
Blair Browning
Cerastus Bear Band (Jamie Bright; Dresden)
E Wade Rodriguez
John Jacobs
Coco Johnson
Michael Rawlings
Jake Riley
Joe Rio
The Rusty Knights (Brandon Barnes)

Many musicians participate each month, such as Wes Devil, who could always be counted on for a lively performance, often accompanied by Falling Under’s Namon Roberts. Paul’s friend Git Shorty is a constant at the jam as well, observing and advising young musicians and sometimes taking to the stage himself to lead impromptu jams.

Frequent performers at Paul’s Jam in 2023 included Andrew Brown, AJ Adams, Greg Combs, and Randy Six. Also appearing at Paul’s Jam was Jason Edward Adams, Drew Bauserman, Howie Campbell, Matt Dalrymple, Harley Dalton, Chris Dowell, and Bo Jamison.

Andrew Brown also served as a member of the Paul’s Jam team, assisting with moving equipment and setup.

A significant change occurred in August when Limitless Recording Studio began offering its on-location audio production services to Paul’s Jam, ensuring performers they will get the best possible sound. Limitless Recording Studio provides professional audio services for live music on location and for studio recording.

Paul’s Jam @ The Barn is on winter break but is expected to resume for its eighth year when the patio reopens in March 2024.

Paul's Jam is one of many ways Jim Watson and The Barn demonstrates its commitment to local music and its billing as "the home of live music in Zanesville." The Barn offers live music every weekend throughout the year and, in warm weather months, every Thursday through Sunday.

The Barn is located at 1947 Linden Ave in Zanesville. For more information, go to these links…

Quinn Family Bash

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Covid-19 pandemic has prevented more than its share of social gatherings and events, which has kept many people isolated and alone.

One such event was the Quinn Family Bash that was created to uplift and support people battling mental illness and addiction with a fun, sociable atmosphere filled with music and laughter.

Event Organizer and National Alliance on Mental Illness Officer Paul Quinn talked about the event and how it gives people an opportunity to communicate and recognize that they are not alone.

“Well we’re excited on Friday, we’re going to have the Quinn Family Bash, which had been an event for 20 years and had been interrupted the last three years by Covid,” Quinn Said. “So we’re excited to finally bring this back to the community. And really the idea is to have a fun day for celebrating recovery from mental illness and addiction. You know, we thought maybe this event had run its course after 20 years but we just had an outpouring from people saying they missed that event.”

What started as a family musical gathering in their living room has grown into an event that features multiple entertainers performing to hundreds of people.

“Git Shorty has agreed to come out and kick things off. So we’re going to have a little jam session with Shorty and Steve Spires and some of the Quinns. We’re going to have a little jam session. My nephew Brian Quinn is an accomplished musician, who plays in blues bands in the Chicago area and I’m excited to hear him playing with Git Shorty. That promises to be a whole lot of fun. And then the Quinn Family will perform for a couple of hours, doing our usual hijinks,” Quinn said.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by NAMI Six County and will take place at Noon this Friday, at the Zanesville Muskingum County Welcome Center, located at 205 North Fifth Street in Zanesville.

Limitless Recording Studio is proud to provide audio production services for this community event.

Tune into WHIZ-TV News tonight at 5 and 10 pm on Fox, and 6 and 11 pm on NBC for a report on the Quinn Family Bash, being held tomorrow (Friday) at the Welcome Center, 205 N. Fifth Street in Zanesville at noon. The event is free and open to the public.

Legendary entertainer Git Shorty will collaborate with Zanesville musician Steve Spires and members of the Quinn family for an impromptu set before the Quinn family singers perform at 1 pm.

Since 2000, the Quinn family has traditionally gathered annually to perform in the name of recovery from mental illness and addiction.

The Quinn Family Singers were spawned by long-time NAMI leaders Tom and Margaret Quinn of Zanesville, including Gretchen (Quinn) Booth of Nashport; Tom Jr. of Athens and his son Brian of Chicago; Carolyn of Zanesville; Paul and Patrick Quinn of Zanesville; Chuck of Detroit; and Francie (Quinn) Pendley.

The Quinn Family Singers proudly features Brian Quinn, a professional musician (bass guitar) in Chicago. Brian performs frequently with two prominent Chicago bluesmen, Omar Coleman and Toronzo Cannon. Brian also leads a funk band of his own called simply “BQ.”

The WHIZ-TV report includes an interview with NAMI officer Paul Quinn. “The Quinn Family Bash is intended to be a day to set aside our problems for a few hours and join others for socialization, music and fun,” Paul told reporters. “Treatment works for those with mental illness and/or addiction. And this is a day to celebrate recovery.”

“We need to educate ourselves about these conditions,” Quinn said. “Ignorance allows people to discriminate against and stigmatize persons with brain disorders. That’s why our jails and prisons are flooded with people with mental illnesses and addiction. Our society would rather imprison people for their disorders than devote resources for treating them. Frankly, it’s barbaric and we should be ashamed.”

“Having a mental illness or addiction doesn’t make you a bad person,” Paul continued. “But, left untreated, these conditions often lead to bad outcomes. We need to recognize and accept that mental illness and addiction are treatable conditions and that resources need to be made available to those who are suffering from them. If we properly addressed this issue, we would see dramatic drops in drug overdoses and homelessness, which go hand in hand with mental illness and addiction.”

Tune in to WHIZ TV news tonight for more.

The Quinn Family Bash is presented by NAMI Six County, an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness in southeastern Ohio. NAMI Six County serves Muskingum County and the five surrounding counties. NAMI works to improve the lives of the mentally ill through education and advocacy.
