If you want to skip the crowds, weekdays in October is the time to be there.

Tip: When visiting Lake Rudolph Campground, rent a golf cart! The park is huge and taking golf cart cruises are our favorite!

This was our first time at Balloon Fest and it was so neat! We were in a field and watched them set up the balloons all around us. It was a little too windy for rides but we still had a blast!

Barrett was excited to sit in a military vehicle that he spotted at one of the booths!

Home base views at the Glampin’ Barn! We had friends camp in our driveway for a few days. The sound of children’s laughter, scooters, music, corn hole and deep conversations echoed our little country paradise! ❤️

We recently explored and other trails in Southern Illinois!

👉Sand Cave-Largest Sandstone cave with great history!
More than 12,000 years ago, Sand Cave was part of the region that was home to the Illiniwek, a nation of 12-13 distinct Native American tribes after whom Illinois takes its name.

The Underground Railroad used Sand Cave as a place to hide large numbers of people. It was also used as a landmark to let runaway slaves know they were still on the path to freedom.

👉Heron Pond - Located in the Little Black Slough Nature Preserve, home to over 100 endangered and threatened plant and animal species on the Ohio flood plain. Along the trail you will find a floating boardwalk that takes you out into the cypress/tupelo swamp.

Continuing down the Heron Pond trail you will find Illinois largest Cherrybark Oak Tree. Standing 105’+ tall,and 26.43’ in circumference, this tree is a sight to see!

👉Trigg Observation Tower- Originally built in 1934 as a former fire watch observation tower. It is the last remaining fire tower in the Shawnee out of 16 towers that once stood in the forest.

A fun test of fear of hights-and I failed 🤣. If you’re brave, you are allowed to climb 50ft to the top and can see for miles and miles!

👉River to River Trail- Spanning from the Ohio River to the Mississippi River, this 160-mile trail passes through some of the most scenic areas of southern Illinois, including upland forests, wetlands, grasslands and bluffs.

I only traveled a short section of the trail this time but used the R2R to connect a couple other trails.

👉Millstone Lake- Small but beautiful lake near Simpson, IL. Many rocks with fossils can be found here, as well as huge rocks with deep canyon type crevices. These rocks were uncovered in 2008 & 2011 due to a flash flood.

In about a week and a half I’ll be back in the Shawnee for the Shawnee Hills Trail Races 50k! Every time we visit, I fall in more in the love with the area! 😍

74 electric only sites

We stayed 10 nights and loved our stay! We had an electric only site for $18/night. The park fills up for the weekend but ends up pretty empty during the week! The Rangers have programs on Fridays for the kids at the amphitheater-this week they learned about animal tracks! Beautiful views, playground, boat ramp & marina.

The only downside to this park-they have many unlevel sites.

Carlyle Lake has over 20 miles of bike trails and several miles of hiking trails! The kids and I enjoyed 5.8 miles to see the dam and two bridges! It is a little drive to the trails from Boulder Campground.

Tip: If you’re over 62 you can get half off these sites with America the beautiful pass.

Gateway Arch National Park

We are celebrating our 10 year anniversary in STL!

I (Kayla) haven’t been to the arch since I was a child. We enjoyed walking by the river and viewing the arch up close!

We are waiting to ride the tram to the top until we can bring the kids along!
