Well, which one is it?
Actually, all three. I use the method that is right for the job. In woodworking, don’t let anyone tell you there is only one way to do something. As long as it is safe, it flies.

Time is the ultimate factor
If you put in the time, the effort, the repetitions, you’ll find there is nothing you cant overcome. In my case, improvement is the goal.
I operate with ‘I can’ attitude. Regardless if I’ve tried to make it before, I’m willing to give it the old college try. The reality is, it won’t always be your best, but it’s rare to nail anything on the first attempt.
My goal is to always improve. Create a processes that improves efficiency and refine the end product. All-while becoming a better woodworker/maker in the process.
It really is simple.

It’s complicated
The perfect stain for the job, was actually 3 separate stains. This project was the perfect combination of working towards a known goal and polishing up skills with lesser used products.
I used @goodfilla ‘s very versatile wood grain filler on the underside for no reason other than to practice using it. I even tinted it with some black dye. On the show side which still may never be seen, I worked hard to match the border using three different stains.
Here’s what I used:
- 1st coat Espresso
- 2nd coat walnut semi transparent
- 3rd coat chestnut
The mirror frame had a unique color the client wanted to keep so let’s get creative.

The answer is…
3, but you already knew that, because I told you.
We all know that different species of wood react differently to the same stain. I’m resetting a mirror and adding a new back panel as the original has seen better days. For the back panel I’m going with sande plywood. It doesn’t really behave well with stain.

If the floor is often your workbench…
Get yourself one of these to save your knees. Or if you have one you used to use to give your kids a bath, repurpose it.
You’re welcome.

Crafted this cedar planter with love and attention to detail. Cedar’s natural scent and lightweight feel make it perfect for outdoor projects. Personalized with routed initials and a touch of purple epoxy for a unique look. Finished with @totalboat Halcyon clear for lasting protection using my new @wagnerspraytech 5700. Proud of this woodworking masterpiece! 🌲✨ #woodworking #planter #cedar #handcrafted
It won’t beat me
Don’t let big box store lumber beat you. I spend a lot of time picking out lumber that is the most straight at the time. Unfortunately, sometimes one slips past you. Or worse, it twist over time, before you get to put it to good use.
Nonetheless, you found yourself in a situation where square was goal and the lumber isn’t playing fair.
I use this method to remove the twist. It forced the wood into submission.

There’s something about this matte finish I just love. #woodworking #flag #powercarving
It had to be beefy so we went vertical
This tenoning jig is probably a little larger than it has to be, but overall, I’m happy with the results.
To make an angle less than 45 degrees on the table saw, it required a little creativity.

I winged it…
Get it? If you are or ever been in the Air Force, you would definitely get it. Corny! I know…
Anyway, this is the part I had no experience with. I couldn’t figure out what glue to use to attach the velvet to the foam board. Most glues were very wet and made a mess on the show side. Until I found the Scotch 77. It had plenty of holding power and was easy to apply.
