Washington, DC - Snake-Like Trumps Hisses at Native Reporter Asking About Native American Citizenship
While signing new Executive Orders signaling the political agenda of his administration, the 47th president Donald Trump taunted a Native reporter asking about Native American citizenship.
The newly elected president did not hide his derision for the journalism and Native American presence. Cherry Yazzie, a Diné reporter for Navajo Daily, was shocked at the president's rude and sacrilegious taunt.
Afterwards, the Navajo reporter spoke to Tlochiin News about their experience.
"I did not expect the president to act as he did", the seasoned reporter said. "How did he know that Navajos do not take snake-like behavior lightly "? "I came to inquire about the direction of his administration so I didn't expect to be insulted in front of my respected colleagues".
Native reporters and members reacted to the blatant disrespect on social media.
"Wow, our 47th president is acting like the 666th president", one person posted on social media known as X.
"That's my president, Washington is full of snakes so you have to act like a snake to clean the swamp" said a Native Trump supporter".
"Joe Biden would never do this. He might ramble a little bit but he would never disrespect Native communities like this".
Cherry Yazzie said the act would not deter her from doing her job and speaking truth to power with Native journalism. Yazzie said that she covered Biden's administration for four years and never felt uncomfortable.
"I questioned Biden on his stance on Palestine and he changed the subject quickly but he never hissed at me" she said over the phone with Tlochiinn. "I was denied a press pass for a couple weeks but I was allowed to cover his apology to Natives".
