It's funny, but it's not funny.
All jokes aside, if every person in the reptile community did their part to be responsible and properly quarentined and disinfected animals, cages, facilities, and equipment, there wouldn't be any mites in anyone's collections. They spread disease and cause stress to animals, and for anyone with a large collection, they can cost a fortune to get rid of, and some breeders act like it's impossible to get rid of them and that low numbers of mites can just be tolerated while they cause a constant reoccurring expense to treat collections. Meanwhile many breeders distribute mites all over the country and endanger people's pets as if mites are just the status quo, like they think we all have mites.
Some of us like to have clean collections. I'm not trying to be on my soapbox here, but anyone who knows me knows I genuinely care about my animals and about the community, and anyone who moves animals without ensuring they're disinfected or decontaminated, or without warning the buyer is endangering entire collections and this really needs to stop. It's blatantly reckless behavior and shows a disregard for animal health and safety. I'm sick of having to quarentine and disinfect animals at a cost of hundreds of dollars.
Earlier this year, I brought in a high end animal worth thousands from a "big name" in the community. Within a few days, it looked like a mite bomb had exploded. I wasn't warned ahead of time to expect mites, to quarentine, or to disinfect. A heads up would have been great, and animals sold with mites should be severely discounted as if the animal was sick or near death because mites put the animal in danger and at risk of death and this threatens entire collections.
The community needs to do more, but sadly it only takes one asshole not doing their part to spread mites around. I feel like the community needs to agree to work together to fix this problem. Mites should not be tolerated. Mites are not acceptable.
