A Pixar vocal chain. We welcome a Brauner VM1 and a Focusrite RED 7 to the arsenal. These two pair very well for voice over work but I've been enjoying them on other sources too. The Brauner in Omni mode sounds extra good, just make sure you're in a good sounding room. The channel strip gives us a lot of control over dynamics, including a de-esser.

immersive was a cool experience. We enjoyed Nashville trying new things this time. No studio stuff. Great pizza and ice cream. Even Taco Bell has live music! The rain didn't stop the fun either.

The location sound workshop hosted by AES Atlanta at .audio was an insane knowledge bomb drop. It was incredible to learn more about this side of audio.

"Boulevard of broken strings (and dings)" ... I love visiting GC's like these where there is a large variety of instruments to try before you buy. But of all the GC's I've visited, when it comes to popped strings and dings this one takes the cake.

It's been one heck of a first year at Shocker Studios. Time flies when you're having fun, so here we are, finally posting something halfway into 2023. New Audio Production courses rolling out for our students, fresh new partnerships with industry pros, and loads of reputable and reliable pieces of equipment for our students to be ready for the industry. The energy is beyond positive at . Summer will continue to see upgrades and improvements to the recording studios and preparation for the upcoming academic year. More exciting things to come. Beautiful in untampered condition arrived with the very common disintegrating foam issue. Cleaned the capsule and inside so the foam would not stick and cause damage. Replaced the foam. Still sounds great and will serve many recordings very well.

The sound of a pair of mics with "brass" capsule near the hammers is unparalleled. Except perhaps by the sound of a pair of mics modified by capturing from a few feet away. Two different tastes, but there's a blend for everyone. It was interesting to listen to the other different mics, including an old telephone that i repurposed as a mic.

The only reason I ever sold my SF24 was to get a pair of SF2s. Every now and then i make an SF24 out of them.

Built 4 gobos today 💪 with the help of one of our student-employees. These gobos are beasts, but if you order a set, be prepared to assemble them yourself (see last pic for materials).

Monikered "the digital studio" (vs. the analog studio), Studio D is our high-tech room that exposed our students to cutting-edge technologies not only to enhance their working knowledge of the tech but to prepare them for when they step into the industry.

This black Friday i hunted down great deals for epic books on microphones. They are filled with incredible historical, artistic, and technical (data) insights about mics. These will be invaluable resources for the Microphones class I'll be teaching. There's one more book that will soon be on it's way. Looks like I'll stop collecting mics soon and start collecting books on mics now.

What microphone book do YOU recommend i should get next!?

From this week's WSU Jazz ensembles recording at Roxy's which was the first part of a final project of one of our Audio Production students. The Neumann TLM 170s, again, faithfully delivered awesome drums in the spirit of the Glyn Johns technique. The sphere's were incredible as a main spaced pair. They rocked the saxes on stage - the imaging is phenomenal (a pair of spheres for 5 saxes). The faithful 57 delivered for all guitar amps (except one which was actually a 58 without the ball grill!). Preamps were a combination of Millennia, Micstasy, and the UFX+ pres. It's easy to record when the performers are solid, well prepared, and enjoy what they do. Excellent job and the ensembles.

We got a new toy ... tool ... at Shockers Studios today. A long wait but worth it. The Grace pres will replace one of the Octopres in the "digital" studio; very suitable for the voice and Foley work our students perform in there (amongst other musical projects). What will replace the 2nd set of Octopres??

The last gadgets of the day are the #Punchlight Display and Lamp. These are great visuals that make some workflows a whole lot easier. I can't wait for our students to start using them in the studio! Sidenote: Of course all of these toys would come in when i was out sick! 😆
