Black Barbie’ Documentary Acquired by Netflix and Shondaland
Netflix and Shondaland have acquired worldwide rights to “Black Barbie,” a documentary that dives into the history of the first Black Barbie doll — which debuted in 1980, 31 years after the original Barbie — and three Black women at Mattel who advocated for the toy.
The film, written and directed by Lagueria Davis — whose aunt worked at Mattel and championed the groundbreaking doll — debuted at SXSW and was also featured at Wichita’s Tallgrass Film Festival earlier this month.
Davis’s personal tie to the material is the entry point to the documentary, which chronicles the Black Barbie’s journey and cultural impact.
