Comments from the TIPA judges about our three awards.

OVERALL EXCELLENCE

Place Name: Second Place
Contestant Name: Midwestern
Entry Title: Voices 2020-21
Entry Credit: Ashton Bayliss, Meredith Berend, Jane Browning, Stephanie Robledo
Judge Comment: Good balance and variety in themes, length, genre, and subject matter. Particularly good ordering of the publication, with an emotional and thought-provoking journey for the reader. Excellent depth and creativity. For the next edition, perhaps consider a small note tying together the intriguing cover design with the issue theme or the vision of the editorial team in selecting these pieces.

OVERALL DESIGN

Place Name: Second Place
Contestant Name: Midwestern
Entry Title: Voices 2020-21
Entry Credit: Ashton Bayliss, Meredith Berend, Jane Browning, Stephanie Robledo
Judge Comment: Simple, clear, puts the focus on the work instead of the medium itself. Overall good use of space, and lines at the top of the continuing pieces work well as both clear communication and visual indicators.

COVER DESIGN

Place Name: Third Place
Contestant Name: Midwestern
Entry Title: Voices 2020-21
Entry Credit: Hallie Diehl
Judge Comment: Clean, professional, good use of color, leaves the reader curious for more, good parallel shapes on front and back to tie it together.

Our Story

Voices is a regional arts and literature journal produced and published annually by students and faculty at MSU Texas in Wichita Falls, Texas. Voices publishes ambitious and imaginative fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, and art from high school, undergraduate, and graduate students in Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas. We are looking for original creative pieces that paint with imaginative colors, speak with compelling voices, and render characters with dimension and complexity.
