On this day 10 years ago, I visited Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland. I was struck by the irony of marking the anniversary of my country's independence in a place where thousands of people, mostly Jews, lost their very lives because of who they were. So, I wrote this poem, "Fourth of July at Auschwitz." On this July 4, I link to the poem, which I hope you will read. Let it remind you that our freedom is precious and vulnerable. Never let bullies and demagogues, using lies and exploiting fear, take our freedom from us. If we do, we may never get it back.
