Last week I took a trip out to LA to visit some of my awesome branding friends and mastermind community to close out the first quarter.

Jumping into the brand world just a handful of years ago felt surreal; learning from big thinkers and curious minds made it all possible.

This trip challenged my thinking and now I have come back with refreshing clarity.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! 🎄

One of my favorite things about getting on video calls is being able to set the tone with my studio setup.

Over the summer and fall, I had tons of fun with seasonal flower arrangements in my background that fit with our brand colors.

This month is simple and festive with our mini Christmas tree.

Congrats to our Executive Director & Producer, David Pierce Tuttle for directing his team to win some exciting awards in the 48 Hour Film Project!

Last month, David along with the Film Diner crew, participated in the 48 Hour Film Project. Just like the name says, the team was given a genre, a prop, and a line of dialogue to then make a short film in 48 hours.

They randomly selected musical and/or martial arts as their genre and ended up making a comedic, martial arts musical fighting their way to freedom through song.

Their film was recognized for the following awards:

🏆 Best Choreography (fight scene)

🏆 Best Special Effects

🏆 Best Costume (runner up)

Congratulations to the entire Film Diner crew and all the other teams who participated!!

REI takes a bold move and opts out of participating in the hap-hazard, holiday fiasco we all know as Black Friday.

No deals. No crazy store hours. No open stores.

Instead, they encourage employees, friends, family, and brand advocates to .

Time is our most valuable resource on earth so when a company leads with spending time outside of their stores, it speaks volumes about their values.

It also tells me they know their customers.

They know their customer well enough to choose to go against the grain.

How much money do you think REI passes up each year to close on Black Friday?

My bet would be it doesn’t matter to REI because they probably understand that brand culture and values supersedes a profitable weekend.

And in reference to a long-term strategy, customers become more loyal and supportive of the brand.

Here’s the takeaway:

Know your customers and make choices for them that surpass the obvious.

Today I had an amazing time chatting with high school girls about their career path at Career & Leadership Summit for High School Girls.

When I was in high school, college, and even 5 years into my career… I didn’t know how to get into the branding field. It was out of reach and I felt like I could never get there.

It’s been a passion of mine to bring more clarity to the career options our youth has and help inspire them to believe that anything they put their mind to is in reach.

Nerdy Girl Success is doing awesome things around empowering young women to be leaders in the workforce and I’m grateful to see their work in action.

A big cheers to empowering our youth and building a world of diversity and impact ⭐️

“A bottle so distinct that it could be recognized by touch in the dark or when lying broken on the ground.”

A mastery of distinction is recognition even at your worst.

When traveling through Atlanta, Chels toured the iconic Coca-Cola museum. There, you can find branding lessons laid out across every square inch of the building.

What stuck out the most was this genius design brief originated in 1915 before the concept of brand became universal.

We wonder what the creative challenges were to create such distinction in that era.

As we look at our current landscape, you can see an influx of brands attempting distinction while new brands surface within every big business pivot.

🐺 The moment you think you are leading the pack, you’ve just gone backwards by your competition who has successfully outmaneuvered you.

In today’s age, where does distinction come from?

To truly answer that question, we are convinced that you first need to understand why you are so compelled to do what you do. Understand your offer in a way that delivers your motivation in your position.

👉 What was the motivation for Coca-Cola to create the most distinctive bottle of its era and arguably still today?
