We spend our days moving through a sea of objects. Most are impersonal and sterile, but some are alive with meaning and stories. This is an antique "Coltello d'Amore," or "love knife." Hand-made from bone and horn in central and southern Italy, lovers would decorate and exchange them, usually as part of betrothal and marriage. The blade reads, "Costante li sarò" (I will be constant) and features an image of the beloved. She and the knife's maker are long gone, but their love lives on hundreds of years later in this beautiful object.

Gold. Human hair. A smiling photograph. These things are combined to make this Victorian mourning bracelet. In the late 1800s, mourning jewelry, often featuring locks of hair, was a popular way to remember a lost loved one - a way to keep them near.

It’s a sobering fact that the vintage and antiques business is intertwined with death. People collect and care for things, they die, and someone like me helps to pass their treasures on to someone else who will appreciate them. Done right, it’s a way of honoring a person’s life.

Perhaps more than anything else I’ve found, this bracelet seems to immortalize a person. A boy smiles at us across a hundred years; he is literally woven into the object. Maybe he’d be gratified that a part of him still survives - but I think he’d be more moved to know that someone loved him, missed him, and wanted to hold him close.

Extra! Extra! Read all about this hefty piece of Buffalo history. Originally part of a wagon used on a delivery route, I love the font and the crisp color. This one's available if you're interested!

I bring unwanted things to the people that will treasure them. And while I rarely know what happens to the things I buy after they're sold and shipped off, today I got to see Jack reunited with posters from a play he starred in decades ago. That's him on the poster!

One man's trash...

I make sure to donate or recycle the things I find and can't use. Today I was at the scrapyard and spotted this beauty sitting out on the floor. I asked about it and was told some kids brought it in to be scrapped, but the yard can't take fire extinguishers because of potential biohazards.

I asked if they'd be willing to sell it to me and was stunned when I was told to just take it. It's "The Ecnarusni Fire Extinguisher" from Buffalo, New York in copper and brass. It would shine up nicely, but I think I prefer it this way. Treasure doesn't always sparkle.

Every grandpa has one of these safety razors in a drawer somewhere, and I can see why you'd never throw one away. In contrast to today's razors, they're strikingly permanent, simple, and masculine. I love buying vintage barber supplies and razors. There's a strong collector base and a growing group that shave with them. Grandpa knew what he was doing when he kept his around.

Most would look at these and see old, discolored knives. But if a knife blade is rusty or discolored, it means it is made with carbon steel instead of stainless steel, which some chefs prefer. If you've got some old cutlery taking up space in your kitchen, send me a message before you toss it!
