I’ve passed this houseboat year after year on my way to . For me, this is the spot where I start to feel relaxed. I’m almost there! So I finally stopped this year, it involved a bit of a highway walk and two lenses for my Olympus OM-1 may or may not have slipped out of my bag during said walk 😬Thankfully I found them on the way back.

So good I had to go back twice during my week here. Hand made tortillas, fresh ingredients, and a staff that works faster and harder than any I’ve seen. I sampled a few different options.
Adobada(spicy pork), asada(beef) and suadero (beef brisket that just melts in your mouth) some as tacos others as mulas which were new to me.
Mulas is like if a taco and a quesadilla had a delicious baby. Two, fresh (made right in front of you) handmade tortillas, cheese melted on the griddle then placed on each tortilla, all the meat and toppings you’d get on a taco and then make a sandwich

Some of the best food I had all week and they’re open late, like 2am/4am late, perfect for those post casino late night wanderings

This is my favorite photo so far from this week in Vegas. It just oozes those old Vegas vibes

I pass this farm stand almost every morning on my commute and often want to stop to take pictures. Usually I just keep driving, talking myself out of it due to lack of time or a good place to pull over. With the freshly fallen snow I couldn’t resist, thankfully I had a camera with me!

After I left the Malarrifsviti lighthouse and unsuccessfully tried to find dinner, I headed back to my Airbnb. I had some time before the aurora would be visible and I thankfully packed a couple of dehydrated meals.

Then, it happened, as I sit down to eat I see the news that the volcano has started erupting. My first thought is jump in the car and go! Open the door, snow storm. Ok, maybe gather some info first. The info was can’t get close to it, the roads were shut down, the storm outside was blowing and I was 3+ hours away from the volcano.
Once the storm calmed down, I figured I’d try driving somewhere close first, when I first got to Kirkjufell there were no signs of the northern lights. I stayed for a while, got properly cold and started to pack up. Out of nowhere and later than predicted the sky began to light up. This showing of the aurora was much brighter than two nights prior and I had the place to myself. What an amazing experience!
By the time I got done it was close to 3 or 4am, I didn’t have it in me to make the long drive and I thought to myself “the last volcano erupted for several weeks, I’ll just grab a couple hours of sleep and then go”
Not completely the wrong decision, I did need some sleep for a long snowy drive but the eruption died down significantly overnight and by the time I got there/from the distance I was at there wasn’t much I could photograph. That being said, I’m glad that the eruption didn’t go the other way and become more of a major disaster. Someday I’ll get close to one.

Happy New Year! 🎆
May you find a light to guide you through whatever the new year brings

I almost didn’t go to this light house. In fact, I was beelining it to the nearest restaurant trying to catch them before they closed. It was dark, snowing and windy as heck when I blew by a sign. It took a minute to register “oh yeah that’s one of the lighthouses!” I stopped the car and pulled a U-ey. It was totally worth the detour! The falling snow made the beam of light really stand out, and that restaurant…wasn’t open to begin with.

Budakirkja - I spent quite a bit of time at the black church. That wasn’t the plan but as I got out of my car four tour groups pulled up. Two full size busses and two large vans, perfect timing! In light of the situation I went for a walk. There’s a wonderful little path down to the water, this gave me some different perspectives I may not have found if I made the quick stop I originally intended. I also got some great close up shots focusing on the details, like how the wind blown snow was sticking to the church and the way the light was hitting the windows. Also, a great way to shoot around the crowd. The busses moved on and I was able to get a few solitary shots before the light completely faded. As a bonus some locals came by to light up the church for the night and I got a quick peak inside. Such a cool building with amazing surroundings.

Iceland Adventure Day 3 12/18/23 Snæfellsnes Peninsula

I have to break up day 3 into a few parts, there’s just too much to see and I pushed hard all day and night to fit in as much as I could in since it was my last full day here.

I woke up to around 10 inches of fresh snow, a gorgeous sunrise and Kirkjufell right out the front window of my airbnb. I couldn’t even tell the mountain was there the night before but now there was no way anyone could miss it. After a quick bowl of miso and some tea for the road I headed out for the day.

First stop was Kirkjufell, the freshly falling snow and pastel hues of the sunrise made for an ethereal experience. I spent quite a bit of time here photographing the surrounding landscape as well as the mountain. This photo set is from there as well as the drive to budakirkja (the black church). On a side note, I love this little Suzuki Jimny! Wish we could get them in the US.

Iceland Adventure Day 2 - 12/17/23

Mistakes were made.

Shorter story today, I was exhausted and had a 3 ish hour drive ahead of me. I chose to hang out in Reykjavik and do some shopping for the family thinking I’d head out around noon as not to have to drive in the dark all the way to the Snæfellsnes peninsula.

First mistake, I left my camera at the airbnb thinking I wouldn’t be long wandering town and it was raining.
The iPhone photos here don’t truly capture the depth and color of this beautiful city.

Mistake number two, I ended up leaving a little later and missed all the amazing scenery and on the drive out to Snaefellsnes.

Mistake number three, when I did finally make it to my next stop, it was snowing hard and the wind was really ripping. I decided to stay in thinking there’s no way I’d be able to see the aurora in this. It wasn’t until the next day when I ran into another photographer I had realized what I had missed. He said the weather cleared and the aurora came out of nowhere and then showed me his photos of gorgeous, defined green and purple waves above Kirkjufell mountain. 🤦‍♂️

I won’t make that mistake again.

But to end on a positive, I thoroughly enjoyed my day in Reykjavik. And I got a good nights sleep for the first time in 3 days, which helped with the following days to come.

Tune in tomorrow for day three, it was pretty epic!

day 1 - 12/16/23

After a canceled flight and a 3 hour delay I finally made it to Reykjavik 28 hours later than planned. Slept for a few hours then made my way to a one day workshop with
I am so grateful for the wealth of information that was shared, great conversations, two part questions and new connections. If you have the opportunity to attend one of his workshops, you should

That night I made my way out to national park to try and catch the . I caught my first glimpse in the rear view mirror. It was my first time seeing the in person and in my excitement I just stopped in the middle of the road (don’t do this) and jumped out to take a photo. I stepped out onto pure ice, caught myself on the car and questioned “how am I driving on this?!” Thanks for equipping my Suzuki Jimny with studded tires. I wouldn’t have made it very far without them.

So, bad idea, back in the car, onward to Thingvellir before the aurora disappeared. The slow icy drive led me to a parking lot near some water. Not my intended goal but at this point it was at least 1am, there were some interesting features around and the aurora was still out. Not wanting to miss my opportunity I decided to photograph what was around me rather than spend the rest of the night searching. Here are a few photos from that spot.

On my way out I did find the turn I had missed, went past it for a moment thinking, “it’s way too late, I still have a slow, icy drive back” and then turned around and went exploring anyway. This becomes a common theme for my trip. As I started hiking in to the gorge that is between two continental plates I could hear a waterfall. The path was icy but manageable, I made my way to a bridge over the rushing water, even with my headlamp I couldn’t really make out what was below me, just that it was powerful rushing water. The weather started to change quickly, as it often does. It was 3am with an hour drive ahead of me, fueled by my first aurora sighting I headed back to Reykjavík. What an amazing start.
