"In January of 2022, Katia had a minor fall on the playground at school.

As a precaution, her momma (Cruz) took her to the ER for X-rays to ensure nothing was broken. The doctors did not see any internal damage and advised Cruz to monitor her symptoms at home.

Alarmingly, her symptoms worsened -- including high fever, throwing up, and refusal to eat. Another doctor visit, including an ultrasound, found Katia had internal bleeding and two masses in her abdomen.

At that time, the masses were believed to be hematomas due to the fall. They continued to treat her symptoms as a result of the hematoma and expected her to recover quickly, but her condition eventually escalated to the unfathomable.

After several weeks of continued tests and doctor visits, Katia was diagnosed with Stage 3 Wilms' tumor on May 18, 2022. Wilms' tumor is a rare kidney cancer that primarily affects children.

Immediately following her diagnosis, Katia began chemo treatment at MD Anderson in Houston. This beautiful girl will complete 25 chemo treatments, undergo kidney removal surgery in July, followed by more chemo and radiation.

It will be a long, tough road.

It's a terrifying experience to hear your child has cancer and not something any parent can ever prepare for. This journey has already proven to be a difficult road full of ups and down, highs and lows, wins and losses.

Despite the challenges, Katia's big smile remains bright.

If you know Katia, you know she is full of joy --- she loves to dance, laugh, and all things Disney princess. She has a huge heart and adores her baby sister, Kamila.

She is strong, resilient, and WILL win this fight."

Last year, 33-year-old Jesse Whitten and his wife adopted a little girl. Normally, that would not have made the news. But this was a pretty special adoption. Jesse works with the Santa Rosa Police Department in California and he meets all sorts of people while out on patrol. One day, he met a drug-addicted homeless woman with nowhere to go, and she was pregnant. Later, Jesse took his wife, Ashley, out with him to meet the woman. They both offered to take the woman to a rehab facility. That's when the woman realized that this couple was very loving and caring. And that's when she asked them if they would adopt her unborn child. The couple had three other young daughters at home and they had to do a lot of thinking about it. On Feb. 9, she gave birth to a little girl, who was named Harlow. Hospital officials asked her if she wanted to put her baby into foster care, but she declined. Instead, she told them to call Officer Whitten and his wife. So they did. And on Aug. 30, the Whittens became the official parents of little Harlow. Says Ashley: Harlow's mom envisioned "this beautiful life for her daughter and because of her situation, she couldn't give that to her. But because of her interactions with Jesse through the police department, she knew she could trust him." And that trust will see Harlow through the rest of her life.

Shortly after Kouri Richins' husband Eric died in March 2022, she self-published a children’s book about grief called 'Are You With Me?' The illustrated storybook explores a young boy’s perspective as he comes to terms with the loss of his father.

On May 8, Richins was arrested and charged with her husband’s murder.

Utah authorities claim Richins poisoned her husband with a lethal amount of fentanyl that she allegedly placed inside a cocktail. The 33-year-old Richins claimed she found her husband in their bedroom 'cold to the touch' after sleeping that night in their children’s bed to comfort them after having a nightmare.

According to court documents obtained by NBC News, Richins is accused of procuring fentanyl from an unnamed acquaintance, whom she asked to get 'some of the Michael Jackson stuff,' a reference to the singer’s 2009 overdose death.

Richins also allegedly told law enforcement she left her cellphone in her marital bedroom the night of her husband’s death. However, authorities later learned 'that her phone had been locked and unlocked several times and that it showed movement during the time frame when she said she was in her child’s room,' per NBC News.

Richins has been charged with aggravated murder and 3 counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

Copies of 'Are You With Me?' have since been pulled from Amazon. Language in its dedication section reads, '[to] my amazing husband and a wonderful father.' Richins also did a promotional interview for the book on Salt Lake City’s local affiliate KTVX.
