The Road to the Horse is happening right now, and Iโve been glued to the livestream when possible.
This yearโs lineup is stacked:
-Tik Maynard (last yearโs champ)
- Vicki Wilson (a past winner)
- Buster McLaury (who earned his spot through the Wild Card round)
- And one of my personal favoritesโPhil Haugen
Iโve hosted and attended many Phil Haugen Horsemanship clinics, and Iโll be honestโhe holds a special place in my horsemanship journey. When I think of a humble, compassionate, full-of-integrity trainer, Phil is the first one who comes to mind.
He hasnโt always done things the way he does nowโand heโll be the first to admit that.
But thatโs what I admire most.
His mindset.
His willingness to grow.
His ability to explain things in a way that just makes sense.
In a time where arrogance can often outshine humility in this industry, that matters.
This weekend, his c**t gave him a bit more to sort throughโespecially on the groundโbut watching how he handled it reminded me why I respect him so much.
You could tell Day 1 didnโt go as planned. But Day 2? He came out with a fresh mindset, a sense of humor, and a plan to help that horse grow in confidence. Even though heโs competitive (and letโs be honest, would love that RTTH title), his focus never wavered from the horse.
Phil said something during the event that stuck with me:
That mindsetโowning the moment, staying humble, and choosing to grow anywayโis exactly why I admire him.
He didnโt make excuses.
He adjusted.
He kept the horse in mind.
And he made the best of it.
Thatโs the kind of horseman Iโll always look up to.
Donโt get me wrong, Iโve enjoyed watching all the competitorsโ Vicki Wilson, especially.
Being a woman in this industry (and in my area in particular), Iโve often felt like an outsider.
I donโt always approach things with the rough-and-tumble style thatโs expected in some circles.
And thatโs okay.
Thereโs more than one way to get things done.
(Definitely a topic for another post!)
But watching this eventโand seeing how each trainer chose to show upโreminded me what I value most:
- Empathy
- Intentionality
- And never being too proud to keep learning
No matter who wins the title, Philโs already a winner in my book.
And you can bet Iโll be tuning into his podcast recap once the dust settles.
