Today in Baseball History April 29th:

1922: The Giants hit four inside-the-park home runs at Braves Field in their 15-4 rout of Boston. George Kelly hits a pair, with Ross Youngs and Dave Bancroft accounting for the other two 360 ft. dashes around the bases.

1939: On a chilly Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium, Lou Gehrig comes to the plate in the fourth inning and singles off Washington pitcher Ken Chase for his 2,721st and last hit, the most ever in New York Yankees franchise history. The Iron Horse's record will stand for over 70 years until Derek Jeter, another 35 year old captain, surpasses the mark in 2009.

1960: Stan Musial plays in his 1,000th game at first base, making him the first major leaguer to reach that milestone at two different positions. The Cardinals' legend has also played 1,513 games in the outfield for the Redbirds.

1978: The Cardinals tie a franchise record for the quickest nine inning game in their history, taking only one hour and thirty three minutes to beat the Dodgers at Busch Stadium, 1-0. The contest marks the managerial debut of Ken Boyer, replacing Vern Rapp, the Redbird skipper fired four days ago.

1986: Roger Clemens becomes the first major league pitcher to strike out 20 batters in a nine inning game when he fans Phil Bradley with two outs in the ninth in the Red Sox' 3-1 victory over Seattle at Fenway Park. Steve Carlton (1969), Tom Seaver (1970), and Nolan Ryan (1974) shared the previous mark of 19.

2006: Albert Pujols sets a major league mark for home runs in April when his 14th of the month, a solo shot off Jon Rauch in the eighth inning, is the difference in the Cardinals' 2-1 victory over Washington at Busch Stadium. The slugging first baseman breaks the record he shared with ken Griffey Jr. (1997, Mariners) and Luis Gonzalez (2001, Diamondbacks).

2007: At Coors Field, during a 9-7 Colorado win over the Braves, Troy Tulowitzki turns the 13th unassisted triple play in big league history. With the baserunners on first and second on the move in the top of the seventh, Rockies shortstop Tulowitzki catches Chipper Jones' line drive (1), steps on second to retire Kelly Johnson (2), and then tags Edgar Renteria (3) returning to first base.

The Cardinals have agreed to a one year, $5M deal, plus incentives with left-handed outfielder Corey Dickerson, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, pending a physical.

Dickerson spent time last season with the Blue Jays and Marlins, slashing .271/.326/.408 (99 OPS+) in 365 plate appearances.

With a career OPS of .845 against right-handed pitching, Dickerson should provide some left-handed thump for the Cards, as well as a suitable platoon outfielder or DH.

Welcome to St. Louis Corey!

The Cardinals have agreed to terms on deals with RHP Drew VerHagen and RHP Nick Wittgren. VerHagen's contract is two years, $5.5M while Wittgren will earn $1.2M over just one year.

VerHagen, 31, is a six year veteran who pitched for the Detroit Tigers from 2014-2019. The right hander has spent the past two seasons with the Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan. In that span, he went 13-14 with a 3.51 ERA across 207.2 innings.

Wittgren, 30, has pitched for six seasons with the Miami Marlins (2016-2018) and most recently with Cleveland (2019-2021). He's compiled a 18-15 record with a 3.75 ERA while striking out 265 in 271.1 innings.

VerHagen and Wittgren will compete for spots in the starting rotation and bullpen this spring.

Today in baseball history: March 9

1922: Rogers Hornsby, covered by John McGraw of the Giants, signs a 3 yr contract with Cardinals' owner Sam Breadon. The 25 yr old second baseman, who will hit .404 over the 3 yrs of the deal, agrees to $18,500 per season, making him the highest paid player in NL history.

1963: Songwriters Ruth Roberts and Bill Katz introduced the official Met theme song, Meet the Mets, to the public. The tune will be modernized in 1984, adding Long Island, New Jersey, Brooklyn, Queens, Uptown and Down, to the team's East Side, West Side geographical realm.

1995: At a meeting in West Palm Beach, FL, the major league owners vote unanimously to add their 13th and 14th expansion teams, officially granting franchises to Phoenix and Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay's new expansion team will be known as the Devil Rays, a name that will prove unpopular due to its un-Christian reference after being selected from more than 7,000 entries submitted by the public.

2005: Current and former big league players and baseball executives are issued subpoenas to appear on March 17 by the House Committee on Government Reform. The 11 'invitees' to the congressional hearing on steroid use include Sandy Alderson, Jose Canseco, Donald Fehr, Jason Giambi, Rob Manfred, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, Curt Schilling, Sammy Sosa, Frank Thomas and Kevin Towers.

2017: MLB announces Williamsports' BB&T Ballpark, the 2nd oldest minor league ballpark in the US, formerly known as Bowman Field when it opened in 1926, will host the 1st "MLB Little League Classic." The regular season game between the Cardinals and Pirates on August 20, originally scheduled to be played at PNC Park, will occur in conjunction with the Little League World Series that will e taking place in nearby Howard J. Lamade Stadium.

Today in baseball history: March 8

1900: The National League decides to downsize to 8 teams for the upcoming season by eliminating the circuit's franchises in Baltimore, Cleveland, Louisville and Washington. The remaining 8 cities will stay the same for more than half a century until the Braves leave Boston, moving to Milwaukee in 1953.

1941: 'Losing Pitcher' Hugh Mulcahy of the Phillies becomes the first major league player drafted into the Armed Forces. The newest member of the 101st Artillery at Cape Cod's Camp Edwards had lost 22 games last season and 20 in 1938 to lead the NL in defeats both years.

1946: Tuscon's Hi Corbett Field hosts the first spring training game played in Arizona. The Indians, behind the pitching of Bob Lemon, beat the Giants, 3-1, in the inaugural Cactus League contest.

2011: The MLB names Kim Ng as their Senior Vice President of baseball operations, making her the highest ranking woman in the major leagues. The Dodger Assistant General Manager, a post she held since 2001, will report to Joe Torre, who had managed in LA during the last 3 years of her tenure.

2013: Allen Craig and the St. Louis Cardinals agree to a 5 yr., $31M contract extension valued at $43M over 6 seasons. The 28 yr. old first baseman played a vital role in the 2011 St. Louis World Championship, contributing 3 go-ahead RBIs, including a clutch 8th inning line drive in Game 6 that sparked the start of an unforgettable Redbirds' rally.

Today in baseball history: March 7

1914: In the last inning of an intrasquad exhibition game of the International League's Baltimore Orioles, the recently signed George Herman Ruth Jr. hits his first professional home run, a 400 ft. shot at the Cape Fear Fairgrounds in Fayetteville.

1941: P*e Wee Reese and Ducky Medwick become the first players to don protective headgear when wearing plastic inserts inside their caps during a spring exhibition game. The Dodger teammates missed weeks of playing time after being beaned by a pitch during the 1940 season.

1955: Ford Frick announces he favors the legalization of the spitter, claiming it is "a great pitch and one of the easiest to throw." The commissioner believes there is nothing dangerous about the banned pitch, and making it legal again would slow down baseball's increasing offensive statistics.

1956: The major league player representatives accept the owners' position on the expiring World Series and All-Star game television deal and the proposed minimum salary structure, which remains at $6,000. The players are still seeking workman's compensation coverage by all the clubs.

2006: In their World Baseball Classic debut, Team USA blanks Mexico, 2-0. Home runs by Derrek Lee and Chipper Jones, along with Jake Peavy and a bevy of relievers combining to throw a four-hitter, prove to be the difference as the US defeats their neighbors from south of the border.

Today in baseball history: March 6

1923: The Cardinals announce that players will wear numbers on their uniforms' sleeves, with the digits corresponding to their place in the batting order. The Redbirds strongly disapproved of the concept implemented by St. Louis manager Branch Rickey, who acted on a suggestion from sportswriter John Sheridan.

1951: Perennial loser Charlie Brown, who made his debut in Charles Schultz's Peanut comic strip last October, appears in his first baseball game.

1973: In a spring training game against the Pirates, Larry Hisle becomes the first designated hitter in major league history. The contention that the new AL rule will add more offense to the game appears correct when the Twins' DH hits 2 homers and drives in 7 runs.

2001: The dedication of two sculptures, located 60 ft., 6 in. apart, depicting Johnny Podres pitching to Roy Campanella during the 7th game of the 1955 World Series, takes place on the south lawn of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. The life-sized bronze statues, designed by figurative sculptor Stanley Bleifeld, were donated by an ardent Dodger fan Sheldon Fireman.

2005: Suzyn Waldman, making her debut with John Sterling on WCBS-AM (880), the Yankees radio flagship, becomes the first woman in major league history to be a full time color commentator. Waldman is also the first female to broadcast on a nationally telecast baseball game and the first local TV major league play-by-play announcer.

Today in baseball history March 4:

1913: The New York Yankees become the first team to train outside of the U.S. when they start spring training in Bermuda, playing 9 games against the International League's New Jersey Skeeters.

1948: St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Stan Musial ends his holdout, signing for $31,000, the same salary he made last season after new owners Robert Hannegan and Fred Saigh assure him that his salary will increase based on his performance. Musial earns a pay raise of $5,000 when he is hitting .403 at the All-Star break, en route to being named the NL MVP.

1976: The Giants, due to the intervention of San Francisco mayor George Moscone, will stay in the City by the Bay. In a last minute deal, the Stoneham family sells the team to Bob Lurie and Bud Herseth for $8 million instead of the Labatt's Brewery, which had planned to move the Giants to Canada.

2004: Commissioner Bud Selig announces MLB will celebrate "Jackie Robinson Day" in every ballpark on April 15, the anniversary of the debut of the first African American player in the major leagues. Jackie's number 42 was retired for all time in a ceremony at Shea Stadium in April of 1997 to mark the 50th anniversary of Robinson's achievement.

2012: A swarm of bees that moved down the right field line and settled near the Giants' dugout behind first base causes the evacuation of two sections of fans, delaying the split-squad game against the Diamondbacks for 41 minutes. The Salt River Fields grounds crew uses a combination of lemonade and cotton candy obtained from the concession stand to lure them away from fans and players.
