So here's a Father's Day story for you.

A few days ago I was outside with my sons teaching them how to swing a bat and throw a ball.

My oldest asked me "did your dad do this with you when you were a kid?" This question packed a gut-wretching punch.

Honestly, I wanted to break down and cry when I heard those words come out his mouth.

You see, I was not fortunate to have my dad be apart of my life as a child. I missed out on a lot of father/son events and milestones. I watched my friends and classmates with their dads and dreamed of the day. But it never happened.

I have a step-dad but being outside with his "son" playing catch wasn't as important as making money.

So the true answer is an indepth, thoughtful, heartaching response. However the response I gave was simple. "No, my dad did not teach me these things."

My sons don't care for the dramatic back story, they only want to spend time with their dad and learn from him. Again, something I missed out on but want to enrich them with.

So to the dads and stepups that take time to teach their kids, 👊🏿👏🏿THANK YOU!!

Remembering my role. Here's something I wrote in 2012 after participating in an Active Response class.

Life's Lessons
I was in an active shooter course Wednesday and Thursday called Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training or ALERRT.

In the class we learned what to do if we ever come in contact with an active shooter or hostage situation. The class was amazing and fun. I learned a lot but what I took away most from it was a spiritual aspect of my life and that is that I DON'T LIKE TO BE THE REAR MAN. What that means is I like to lead, to be in control. I don't like being led into a situation, I like to be able to see the situation and make my judgments or next move based on what I see.

During the first day of training I was always in the front either the point man or a side man which looks for open doorways and hallways. But yesterday during the practical exercises I was placed as the rear man. I watched for anything that might sneak up from behind.

Being this man meant I had to feel for the front 3 men and try to stay as close as possible to them without running over them. In these kinds of situations it is easy to get tunnel vision and move faster than what you think you are going because of stress during the situation.

So when we started we were all close and tight but when the first gunshot rang out from the bad guy we all began running toward the gunshots. My role was to watch the back but moving that fast it is easy to get separated from the team. Just as with Christ, it is easy to get lost and try to take the lead.

See with Christ we are the rear man. Christ leads us and we have to trust that he will not lead us into a situation without first making sure that we (the team) are in close and tight with him. I didn't like being the rear guard. And I know a lot of people feel the same as me. Its no fun not being in control of your life, but sometimes we have to give up control to make it out of certain situations.

In our spiritual lives Christ must always be in control. We often put our trust in God but it is limited. I have a constant battle with being in control and I knew it as a person but I learned that during this training my spiritual life is also suffering from my need to lead. Let go of "me me me, I have to, only I can, I can't."

We are the body of Christ which means we are a team. We must operate as a team being able to change position on the fly in order to help our teammates.

God I pray that you take away my need to lead and give me the will and ability to be the rear guard. Lead me and open my ears and heart to your wisdom and my eyes to your direction. Father I pray that you bless all those who I come in contact with. Lead them as well and protect us all from the attack of the enemy. God your word says that you are the head and not the tail so please forgive me for putting you behind me. Forgive me of my sins. And thank you, Lord, for teaching me and using me. Amen.

Get ya self out of this mess push the weight off ya back like a shoulder press. Need a change of address don't worry boy you blessed. There ain't a person in this world you need to impress. Just turn to the most high. Let him lead you and be your guide. Get away from the old you sit back and enjoy the ride. Open the Bible when you start feaning. Let the word do some cleaning. On this day 4 years ago, I👮🏿‍♂️ was called📞 out to take an inmate from the Blaine County jail to the Watonga Hospital. When we got there I saw an elderly man having chest pains that was being prepared to be air lifted to Oklahoma City. His daughter was there by his side.

The airmedics needed to use the hospital's gurney to get him to the helo but the gurney was old and rickety. They strapped him to the gurney and turned their backs. I happened to be watching because they had trouble getting the gurney's legs to lock and I just had a bad feeling😬. While they all had their backs turned I saw the gurney begin to lean to the right and before i could get to it, the gurney fell on its side causing the man's head🤕 to bounce off the floor.

His arms were strapped and covered by a blanket. He was sat up instead of laying down. He had no way to protect his fall and in that moment was helpless. The sound of his head hitting the floor was thunderous⛈. I ran to him and picked him and the gurney up then check his welfare while the medics stood by stunned by what just happened. The E.R. nurse checked him and they hurried to get him to the chopper🚁.

His daughter stood by crying😭 and thanking me for helping her dad. She then asked me to pray🙏 with her for a safe trip to OKC and for his health.

That night I was upset😡 that I got called out of my warm bed🛌 to take an inmate to the hospital and spend hours there losing sleep🥱 when I had to return to work at 8 the next morning.

However, despite my attitude to the situation God😇 needed me at that hospital🏥 in that moment and only He knew how to get me there.

She later thanked me for praying with her but it was God that did the work and deserves the glory.
