The Friday Travel Brief with Kia B

Hold on before you book that trip, Sis!

The U.S. State Department just issued a Worldwide Caution for ALL American travelers.

That means right now, today, every single one of us needs to pay attention before we go anywhere internationally.

Let me break it down in plain English because the government language is a lot.

They rate countries 1 through 4.

1 means go ahead.
2 means eyes open.
3 means think hard before you go.
4 means do not go. Period.

Right now Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Yemen are Level 4. Do not go.
Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, UAE and Israel just got bumped to Level 3. If you have a trip booked to any of those countries — pause everything and check your itinerary today.

Now I know a lot of you already know about STEP — the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.

But are you actually enrolled?
Because knowing about it and being signed up are two very different things.

*If you have not logged in and updated your upcoming trips, go do that today at step.state.gov.
*It takes five minutes and it could matter more than your travel insurance.
*Three things I need you to do before you book any international trip right now:

**One — check travel.state.gov before you book. Not travel blogs. Not TikTok. The actual government site updated in real time.
**Two — check your passport expiration date tonight. Many countries require six months of validity beyond your travel dates. Not six months from today. Six months past the day you land. Go check it right now.

**Three — save this number in your phone. If you are ever in an emergency abroad the State Department line is 1-888-407-4747 from the US or 1-202-501-4444 from anywhere else in the world.

The world is shifting fast. A calm traveler does not stop traveling. She travels informed.

For 30 years I showed up in someone else’s building every single day.

On time. Prepared. Giving everything I had.

And when I finally took a vacation? I came home even more tired. Every single time.

It took me way too long to figure out why.

Travel was never designed for women like me.
*Women whose nervous systems are already working overtime just to get through the week.
*Women who need more than a packed itinerary and a hotel with good reviews.

So I started planning trips differently. For myself first. Then for other women who kept telling me the same thing I had been feeling for years.

I want to go somewhere. I just don’t know how to make it not feel like so much.

That right there is why I do this work.

Happy National Grammar Day… and since we’re celebrating, I need to get a few things off my chest.

Because some of these words are being MISUSED in the streets and nobody is saying anything.

So I will.

Literally — does not mean “kind of” or “basically.” It means it actually happened. Literally.

Could of. Would of. Should of. — No ma’am. No sir. It is could HAVE. Would HAVE. Should HAVE. “Of” has never been a verb and it never will be.

And my personal favorite… Conversate. Baby. The word is converse. Or have a conversation. Conversate is not in the dictionary. I checked.

Now I say all of this with love. Because we were not all taught the same things — and that is okay. That is literally why I’m here.

March 4th is National Word Nerd Day — and I have to get this off my chest.

There. Their. They’re.

Three words. One sound. And people swap them like they’re the same thing every single day.

Let’s fix that right now.

*THERE = a place. Put it over there. We’re going there later.

*THEIR = belongs to them. That’s their car. It’s their decision.

*THEY’RE = they are. They’re coming over. They’re not ready yet.

✨ Quick trick — if you can expand it to “they are” and it still makes sense? Use THEY’RE.
