He has performed throughout the country and is often compared with George Duke and characterized by his peers as "The Quincy Jones of Gospel," "a musician's musician," and "a producer's producer." Terrence chronicles a vast history in the gospel and jazz communities, having worked with an extensive array of diverse national artists, brilliant producers, and exceptional musicians, including such notables as Richard Smallwood & Vision, Maurette Brown Clark, Vanessa R. Williams, Marcus Johnson, Alyson Williams, Cee Cee Michaela, Yolanda Adams, Kim Jordan, Jeremiah Murphy, Aretha Franklin, The Winans, Jennifer Holliday, Tramaine Hawkins, Walter Hawkins, Isaiah Thomas, James Cleveland, Shirley Caesar, John Stoddart, Nolan Williams, Anthony Walker, Capria McClearn, Ben Tankard, Bobby Lyle, Nick Colionne, Phillip “Doc” Martin, Tony Craddock, Jr., Eric Valentine, Gerald Albright, Steve Cole, The Marcus Mitchell Project, Spur of The Moment, Barbara Morrison, and many others. Terrence’s musical roots stem from being the son of John and Wilhelmina Richburg, known as Atlantic recording artists, The Richburg Singers, and nephew of the late jazz vocal legend and co-founder of the East Coast Jazz Festival, Ronnie Wells. Richburg rapidly developed his innate musical skills as a child and began performing extensively and recording professionally as a house musician on the hit Gospel TV show, “Spread A Little Sunshine,” and with the child prodigy gospel group, The Ed Gerald Sounds throughout the country. Richburg is an accomplished producer, arranger, composer, musician, multi-instrumentalist (pianist, keyboardist, electric and acoustic guitarist, drummer, percussionist, 4/5/6/7-string bassist, and the list goes on), prolific songwriter, lyricist, vocalist, orchestrator, recording engineer, musical director, clinician, vocal coach, poet, author, and is particularly sought after as an industry authority and resource for all things gospel jazz. Terrence has written, produced and performed musical soundtracks for several videos, theme songs and music beds for radio stations and jingles for major corporations, including D.C.’s WYCB and Heaven 1580, as well as Marriott. He's also been called on as a Musician/MD for theater and musical productions including "Lord I'm Coming Home," "Dream Girls," "The Wiz," "Ain't Misbehavin!" "Wait ‘Til the Fat Lady Sings," "God's Trombones," "City at Peace," "Where Eagles Fly, " along with other events such as the Washington Performing Arts, music award shows, AIDS and Cancer fundraisers, benefits for “Katrina” and “Tsunami” victims, and many other prestigious events. Richburg has enjoyed much success with his gospel jazz group, R&R, with the release of their debut CD, Ascension, featuring Howard Riley, Jr. on saxophone and Terrence on 7-String bass, vocals, and virtually all other instrumentation. In 2007, R&R opened for GRAMMY Award winner CeCe Winans. However, Richburg's current group, The Terrence Richburg Experience, has generated wide acclaim during their live performances, featuring Terrence in his element on bass, guitar, keyboards, and vocals, as the Spirit leads—sometimes with an amazing simultaneous one-man duet on bass and keys or other instruments and vocal scatting. Both groups have offered the very best in inspirational jazz and uplifting gospel jazz music over the years. In 2010 he dropped the popular Christmas single entitled In One Night featuring his now wife, renowned songstress Kathy Richburg. Terrence’s 7-String bass talents were featured on CD releases by Robert Person – Soul Sanctuary (2011), and Kim Jordan – Uncommon (2012). Richburg was also honored by The DC Area Musicians Fellowship and presented the very first annual 2013 Treble Cleft Award for his extensive achievements in gospel music and church music ministry. In April 2014, Richburg was commissioned to write the music, produce and record the brand-new Prince Georges Community College school song, Victorious. Debuted in October of that year, the song received rave reviews from PGCC faculty and college officials. Also, in 2014 and 2015, Terrence had the opportunity to serve as MD and minister with Praise & Worship recording sensation, Shannon Wexelberg, for the ACSI-NEXUS conference hosted at Woodstream Church, broadcasted world-wide. Richburg reconnected with nationally acclaimed jazz Saxophonist and long-time friend, Phil French, to record and produce their first full CD project together, Everlasting… featuring Terrence Richburg, which was released under the RichEscape Music label in January 2015. The album features an assortment of original compositions and arrangements all written and produced by Terrence, and showcases his prolific performance talents on all other instrumentation, multiple instrumental solos, background vocals and vocal leads. Everlasting received rave reviews from listening audiences everywhere, both nationally and internationally. Cuts from Everlasting have been a regular feature on Smoothjazz radio stations all over the world. In addition, industry icons including Ben Tankard, Jean Carne, Norman Connors, and Steven Ford offered glowing reviews of the project. Everlasting received five 2016 Rhythm of Gospel Award nominations, a 30th Annual 2016 Washington Area Music Award (WAMMIE) nomination, and was accepted for nomination in several categories for the 58th GRAMMY Awards. Terrence was also a 2016 featured artist along-side such national artists as Carolyn Malichi and Rare Essence at the “Music at the Monument” concert series held at the Sylvan Theatre and Carter Barron in Washington, DC in support of veterans, post-traumatic stress disorder treatment, youth development, and theatre renovation programs. In June of 2018 Terrence released an unprecedented three simultaneous new CD albums, including contemporary gospel project, RichSpirit ONE – (Silver Anniversary Recording Release), gospel jazz project, Beyond Measure and an inspirational jazz—gospel R&B project, Portrait of Adoration. The two latter projects were accepted for consideration in multiple album and song award categories for the Recording Academy's 61st Grammy Awards. Terrence was also a 2019 Wammie Awards Finalist for Portrait of Adoration as Best Jazz Album, which is currently featured on Smooth Jazz stations and charts globally. Beyond Measure presents a special R&B Jazz blend that has become very popular as well among listening audiences and music lovers everywhere. On all three albums, Terrence is showcased on all instrumentation except for saxophone and extensively featured on lead and background vocals. Richburg was a featured guest for an interview and musical showcase of the new 2018 album releases on the widely acclaimed Don Kroah Show on WAVA 105.1 FM radio and the Soulful Sessions with Robert E. Person Show on uGospel Radio. Also, Terrence’s group The Terrence Richburg Experience performed at the Holy Comforter St. Cyprian Roman Catholic Church 125th Anniversary Celebration, and for a sold-out listening audience at the Vicino’s JazzKnights.com jazz concert series in Silver Spring, MD. June 19, 2022, marks Terrence's newest album project release entitled Treasures, a 16-track album of original Christian jazz, gospel jazz, smooth jazz and inspirational/P&W compositions showcasing multi-genre styles and arrangements that feature probably the most expansive array of vocal and instrumental recording work from Terrence to date. The album has already garnered an overwhelming response from diverse listening audiences with rave reviews from a multitude of fans and industry icons within Christian, gospel, jazz and smooth jazz music communities alike. Treasures is being featured on Smoothjazz.com and Smooth Jazz Radio stations globally and has been accepted for GRAMMY® Awards consideration in multiple categories. In departure from the musical arena, in the world of literature Richburg is a gifted poet, freelance writer and author, and has written many articles and reviews for online publications including Dr. Bobby Jones online magazine, GospelCity.com, DCGospelNewsUpdate.com, The D.C. Gospel News Update E-zine and The Tehillah Report published by Tehillah Enterprises, Inc. Terrence is also the creator and author of the popular E-zine publication, JazzGospelCentral.com. Richburg’s first book, Intimacy: Missing "Peace" in the Puzzle of True Love & Close Relationships published in 2013 marked his official debut as an author. It was featured in the 2013 Frankfurt, Germany and Guadalajara, Mexico International Book Fairs and the 2014 Book Expo America in New York. Terrence has since written two more books including, Soul of a Poet’s Heart: Gallery of Poetry, Prose, & Songs published in 2018, which commemorated his first exclusive publication as an author of poetry, prose and art created and collected over time, and Wisdom Treasures—Ageless Riches for A Modern Society published in 2020, which presents a fresh perspective on using the power of spiritual wisdom and understanding to navigate and impact today’s complex society. In early 2021 Richburg was a featured guest for interviews with CEO Pastor T. on the Illinois based GMAP Broadcast Network show and also with Sarah Hearn on her podcast show “On A Positive Note” to discuss his book, Wisdom Treasures. Although he’s proud of RichEscape Music, the label Terrence started which secured a Stellar Award Nomination and several other award nominations, and his many other accomplishments, he proclaims accepting Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior his most significant life accomplishment. You can catch Terrence performing locally and nationally with his group, as a solo artist, and with his wife Kathy at a variety of events, including regularly at his home church, Israel Metropolitan CME Church in Washington, DC and at other venues throughout the DMV area.
