Whether or not the new foundation leaders come into their jobs as change agents, change in philanthropy is afoot, says Kathleen Enright, president of the Council on Foundations. As battles over diversity, equity, and inclusion rage in board rooms and courts and suspicion of wealth socked away in foundation endowments grows, the new group of philanthropy leaders is poised to play a more public role defending their work and identifying and solving problems.

In addition to coming from nonprofits, the new group is younger and more diverse than their predecessors. Many of the new foundation presidents are from Gen X. More women also fill the top spot. And perhaps most notably, the percentage of private foundation leaders who are people of color has grown by 40 percent since the racial justice protests of 2020, according to a survey conducted by the Council on Foundations.

We report on the death of billionaire philanthropist and The Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus, who was 95 when he died Monday night. He gave at least $2 billion to charity during his lifetime and wanted to be remembered for his philanthropy.

“My mother used to say, ‘The more you give, the more you get.’ And in my case, it's been true," Marcus told the Chronicle of Philanthropy last year.

Vote Run Lead says the 2024 election could be historic in another way — resulting in 51 percent female representation in seven state legislatures.

"We shouldn't have to make the case for our own leadership in a country where we are citizens paying taxes, voting, and providing the economic force and engine of the United States," said CEO Erin Vilardi. "It is simply a fair thing for us and for women of color to be in office."

Many nonprofits have heard that A.I. can be useful to their fundraising. A humane society in Florida shares how they used A.I. to quickly put together a summer fundraising campaign that raised $37,000 from lapsed donors and pet adopters, two groups that have traditionally been hard to activate.

At first, using A.I. to provide content felt a little out of chief development officer Rafael E. Robles's comfort zone. “I'm a traditional fundraiser. Direct-mail pieces have been in existence forever and ever, and we swear by it,” he says. “This was a collaborative between the old and the new.”

But having seen the results, he’s ready to see what else A.I. can do. “I thought it was going to be all or none,” says Robles of Suncoast Humane Society. “It turned out to be a synergistic collaborative between what we used to do and what we can do now with the A.I.-generated content.”

What should nonprofit leaders do to prepare for election uncertainty?

Some organizations have spent months mapping scenarios, while others are just starting to plan. But regardless of where your nonprofit stands, there are concrete steps you can take now.

We spoke with nonprofit leaders about their plans for implementing flexible work policies, creating safe spaces for staff dialogue (without assuming shared views), and staying focused on their missions through uncertainty and election anxiety. We also look at how organizations are connecting with peers and planning their communications for what promises to be a tense post-election period.

Bradley Tusk believes voting by phone could be a solution to increase turnout and close political divides. “I really do believe that this is our single best shot at solving the polarization problem,” the lobbyist, VC, and philanthropist says.

In a moment when nearly half of voters are not confident that U.S. election systems are secure from hacking and other tech threats, is voting by phone really ready for prime time? Meet the philanthropist who's working to make mobile voting a reality.

Bradley Tusk got wealthy working as a political strategist for Uber in its early days. Now he's devoting a significant chunk of his to building mobile voting tech and funding pilots of app-based voting around the country.

Funders can play a transformative role in enhancing individual and community resilience, writes Evan Feinberg of Stand Together Foundation for .

"No question, elections matter, and good policies are essential to improving lives. But if we think that politics is the only way to solve our problems, our mental health is going to keep getting worse," Feinberg said.

The election feels existential but will be disheartening whatever the outcome, writes Evan Feinberg of Stand Together in an essay for . "If the “other side” wins, we’ll be devastated. And when “our side” wins but doesn’t make the difference we hoped, we’ll be devastated, too."

Feinberg argued that funders have an opportunity to bring about social change another way — by supporting nonprofits and platforms that bring individual Americans together to work for the common good. He points to issues like child poverty and homelessness where people are rallying to drive efforts to help.

"People’s action can make an obvious and immediate difference in someone’s life," he writes. "And the more we help others, the more they want to help others, because they see their own power to make an impact."
