Poet, author, and activist Juan Felipe Herrera was born in 1948. Herrera held the highest post any U.S. poet can aspire to—U.S. Poet Laureate. In 2015, He became the first Latino to be appointed to the Library of Congress position.

This 1995 portrait by Harry Gamboa Jr. is in the National Portrait Gallery’s collection.
