The tragic collision between the American Airlines jet and Black Hawk helicopter occurred just as I left the House of the Temple last evening, just a few miles from the crash site. I departed, unaware of the tragedy, tired from a long day but pleased with the results of my little world.

Hopefully, I can be reminded by this juxtaposition of happiness and tragedy, that during each minute of every day, somewhere in our world, someone needs our prayers and our care and concern. I hope that I can now be more mindful of lifting a prayer each day for any tragedy, any suffering among my fellow human beings, which may be impacting them, whether I have knowledge of their pain or not.

May our Creator, by the name that we each quietly call upon Him, give peace and comfort to all those suffering from this tragedy and from the daily tragedies of life, and may He bless those who rush forward to help.

“Although Cyrus [the Great] died at the age of seventy, his empire lasted another 200 years.... However, Cyrus’s moral example has proved even more enduring. His views on statecraft and religious toleration deeply influenced Xenophon, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and, more recently, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson.”— John M. Bozeman, PhD

"The symbolic elements of the pit, the pendulum, and the cell in 'The Pit and the Pendulum' resonate deeply with Masonic themes. These symbols serve to frame the protagonist’s ordeal as a reflection of the Masonic journey, one that encompasses the trials of initiation, the recognition of mortality and the passage of time, and the pursuit of self-improvement through introspection."

The Ghost of Christmas Present (l.) seeks to turn the miser Scrooge’s heart away from selfishness towards altruism in Charles Dickens’s holiday classic "A Christmas Carol."

"As we each look inwards at this special time of year, let us each work towards creating a more compassionate and interconnected world where altruism, not selfishness, is the norm," writes Br. Joshua D. Welch, 32°, in "Selfishness vs. Masonic Altruism" from the November/December 2024 Scottish Rite Journal.

"Sometimes, for us to change ... we only need one tiny moment in time to attain the realization that 'I need to be better than I am now.' That tiny spark of transformational energy onto our Charcoal of potential can create a huge fire, a huge fervent desire to become better than what we are." 🔥
