Although I’ve never agreed with MLK’s non-violent approach, which back then to me seemed more like he was begging for acceptance and inclusion from irrational oppressors, I can at least say he stood for something! He had guts, he had balls, he had vision and he had the audacity! MLK was fearless….he was able to organize, influence and unify with that mindset…all the things WE lack the ability to do today. I was more of a Malcom X (By any means necessary) mindset…. Still am BUT as an elder now I can appreciate that it takes a combination of both types of mindsets to create a movement… a change. I don’t have all the answers Sway but I know that we’re missing key ingredients as a collective: fear of losing what we have, fear of being left standing alone, fear of retaliation … the list goes on. What WE should be scared of is going backward. You will lose everything you’ve worked for if you don’t grow a pair! We will lose everything we’ve accomplished as a collective if WE don’t stand up and change our mindset. Be bold, be fearless, be determined, be together!! Today WE celebrating a man that would be ashamed of how WE have fumbled all that he worked toward by being scary and obedient to the oppressor. Being ceremonious every January is not honoring MLK….you’re actually disrespecting his legacy by allowing yourself to be controlled by your oppressor after all these years by being obedient and complacent just to exist and remain in the same condition he fought and died to get you out of! What are WE doing? My ❤️ is heavy! 😢 RIP to an absolute Icon! The Maestro! You can't mention music without mentioning this man right here! The Genius that produced Michael Jackson's Off The Wall and Thriller (the best-selling album of all time). Named by Time Magazine as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Quincy has received 28 Grammys and an entertainment industry record of 80 nominations. For three famously productive years, he was Frank Sinatra’s conductor and arranger producing, amongst others, the arrangement “Fly Me to The Moon” — the first music played on the moon in 1969 by astronaut Buzz Aldrin. He wrote 33 major motion picture scores, garnering 7 Oscar nominations and winning an Emmy Award for the musical score in “Roots.” In 1985, he debuted his film career and co-produced Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, which received 11 Oscar nominations and introduced Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey to film audiences. He also helped launch and executive produced NBC’s TV hit series The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. While receiving the most prestigious awards around the world, he wrote Q: The Autobiography of Quincy Jones. The book immediately hit the Best-Seller lists of The New York Times, LA Times and The Wall Street Journal. He pioneered the model of using celebrity influence to raise money and awareness for a cause with “We Are The World,” the best-selling single that he produced and conducted. That recording raised $63 million for Ethiopian famine relief. He worked tirelessly with Bono and Bob Geldof to raise billions to end third world debt. Iconic music played at every BLACK cookout and or occasion celebrated with the culture….Another legend gone yall 🕊️ Beverly formed Maze, originally called Raw Soul, in his hometown of Philadelphia in 1970. After a relocation to San Francisco and an introduction to Marvin Gaye, Maze went on to release nine Gold albums and create a large and devoted following. Beverly is the band's writer, producer and lead singer. He is known for his distinctive smooth baritone voice and charismatic stage presence.....He will be missed! First thing I think about when I hear the name James Earl Jones is THAT VOICE! He could command anything and anyone in any room. In my opinion, he is definitely one of the best actors of our lifetime. Jones has been described within the entertainment industry as "one of America's most distinguished and versatile" actors for his performances on stage and screen. He has also been called "one of the greatest actors in American history". He was one of the few performers to achieve the EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony). Jones was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1985 and honored with the National Medal of Arts in 1992, the Kennedy Center Honor in 2002, the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 2009 and the Honorary Academy Award in 2011. Jones made his Broadway debut in 1957 in Sunrise at Campobello. He gained prominence for acting in numerous productions with Shakespeare in the Park including Othello, Hamlet, Coriolanus and King Lear. Jones worked steadily in theatre, winning the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his role as a boxer in The Great White Hope (1968), which he reprised in the 1970 film adaptation, earning him Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. Jones won his second Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his role as a working class father in August Wilson's Fences (1987). He was a Tony award nominee for his roles as the husband in Ernest Thompson's On Golden Pond (2005) about an aging couple and as a former president in the Gore Vidal play The Best Man (2012). His other Broadway performances included Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (2008), Driving Miss Daisy (2010–2011), You Can't Take It with You (2014) and The Gin Game (2015–2016). He received a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2017. Jones made his film debut in Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove (1964). He received a Golden Globe Award nomination for Claudine (1974). Jones gained international fame for his voice role as Darth Vader in the Star Wars franchise, beginning with the original 1977 film. Jones' other notable films include The Man (1972), Conan the Barbarian (1982), Matewan (1987), MY PERSONAL FAVORITE, Coming to America (1988), Field of Dreams (1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990), Sneakers (1992), The Sandlot (1993), The Lion King (1994), and Cry, the Beloved Country (1995). On television, Jones received eight Primetime Emmy Awards nominations winning twice for his roles in thriller film Heat Wave (1990) and the crime series Gabriel's Fire (1991). He is the 2nd best-selling music artist of all time (but recognized as the most successful entertainer of all time) with estimated sales of over 500 million records worldwide; Thriller is the best-selling album of all time, with estimated sales of 70 million copies worldwide. His other albums, including Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory (1995), also rank among the world’s best-selling. He won hundreds of awards (more than any other artist in the history of popular music). 🙏🏾 RIP "Congresswoman" Sheila Jackson Lee. Jackson Lee, a strong progressive voice in the Democratic Party who was outspoken on African-American and women's rights has passed away from pancreatic cancer. "A fierce champion of the people, she was affectionately and simply known as 'Congresswoman' by her constituents in recognition of her near-ubiquitous presence and service to their daily lives for more than 30 years," her family said in the statement. She was active throughout her career in promoting legislation aimed at addressing social justice, economic inequality and public health concerns. Jackson Lee, who represented parts of Houston, introduced a legislation in the House of Representatives to make "Juneteenth" a federal holiday commemorating the end of the legal enslavement of Black Americans. She was one of the longest serving members of Texas’ Congressional delegation dating back to 1994. Jackson Lee built strong ties with her party’s leadership and throughout her caucus and her contributions and her presence will be missed.
