A noisy post-punk version of Wham's "Last Christmas" with STEEL DRUMS???
A NOISY POST-PUNK VERSION OF WHAM'S "LAST CHRISTMAS" WITH STEEL DRUMS!!!
🎄🚨NEW CHRISTMAS SONG JUST DROPPED🚨🎄
Noisy post-punk. Steel drums. Analog synthesizers. George Michael. Fuzz bass. Glockenspiel. Christmas music. Distortion pedals. On an ordinary day, these things belong far, far apart. But we are no ordinary Spectral Band.
Our latest collaboration with Panoramic View’s Aaron Abrahamson Cote is a highly unusual spin on a Christmas classic: an electronic, noisy, steel drum-infused post-punk take on Wham's "Last Christmas." Released on the Ingenii Records imprint, the track melds steel drums, fuzzed-out bass, crunchy distorted guitars, buzzing synthesizers, and processed drums into a lush, enveloping, abrasive soundscape. Airy glockenspiel floats above the fray, while audio samples of an unhinged preacher railing against the satanic nature of Christmas provide the experimental textures seasoned listeners have come to expect from The Spectral Band.
But the real star on top of the Christmas tree is Cote’s nimble and expressive steel drum. He expertly navigates a harmonic and emotional journey with nuanced phrasing and a dynamic touch. Tasteful layers of tape delay, saturation, and other delightful forms of audio degradation augment the organic warmth of the steel drums while intertwining them with the track's harsher electronic textures. There’s no reason to think that steel drums would sound appropriate on a punk version of a Wham! Christmas song. But these steel drums sound haunting, otherworldly, and essential.
