"Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God."

Jesus begins with the example of the Roman coin to give the meaning of this lesson in today's Gospel. The coin is imprinted with Caesar's image - because it bears his likeness, it ultimately belongs to him. What, then, belongs to God?

"Man has been created in the image and likeness of the Creator ... the divine image is present in every man" (CCC 1701-1702).

A little coin may bear the image of a king, but you and I bear the image of the King of the Universe, the Creator God. Therefore, while we must render what is due to our earthly leaders, that is nothing compared to what we owe God, for what we owe him is our very selves.
