Hometown Focus: Northland news & stories Hometown Focus is a highly regarded weekly magazine with a 17-year legacy of serving Northern Minnesota.

Built on a foundation of community engagement, our contributions are from over 1,400 local writers and columnists across the Northland. Hometown Focus (HTF) is a locally owned publication that celebrates life in northern Minnesota with positive local news and stories supplied mainly by community contributors. Our print edition is distributed weekly to hundreds of locations in Grand Rapids, Hibbing

, Virginia, Hoyt Lakes, Cotton, Cook, Ely, and the communities in between. Loyal advertisers (hundreds of them!) and home delivery subscriptions allow us to deliver content at no charge.

• Since our inception in 2007, over 1,100 local contributors from over 45 communities have shared positive news, personal stories, local history, recipes, events, photos, and videos.
• Hometown Focus gives everyone a chance to express themselves and find their inner storyteller.
• We were the first community-driven publication in Minnesota with free print, online, and mobile formats.

“We have discovered that people appreciate a place to rest, relax, and be pleasantly surprised and entertained—a safe haven from the stress-riddled mainstream media. Our readers tell us that they’ve found that place in the pages of Hometown Focus.”
—Jean Cole, Hometown Focus editor (2007–2017)

We here at Hometown Focus believe that writing and sharing your story can not only be healing for you, but those who read your story as well. Contributor Betty Pond has shared a story that is sure to touch the hearts of all who read it.

This is a love story. My interest in it began with a recent email I received from my younger sister, Nancy, where she told me about a paper her grandson, Jackson, had written. She said that Jackson shared many beautiful memories about Nancy’s husband, John. I hinted that

The extra cold temperatures we've been having makes it unappealing to spend much time outside, but if you are running out of things to do in the house, why not play a card game? Contributor Tom Kantos shares his go to game, cribbage, and an update on all the games he played last year.

This is a follow-up to my previous cribbage story and covers all of 2024. As I stated in my previous article from June 14, my wife, Rose, and I try to play three games a day, every day we can. Considering we only played 512 games for 2024,

Anytime we catch an impressive fish, it is natural to want to capture a picture of it. However, Columnist Jody Rae has taken capturing her best catches to another level.

Last night, I dreamed of reeling in a giant grouper the size of my bed and a garden with tropical fruit. I am going through withdrawals, I think. My significant other says it is called “Keys Disease.” I woke to daylight beginning to shine into my bedroom window.

While many of us here on the Iron Range may not be enjoying the chilly temperatures of late, Contributor Mitch Goerdt has a poem to remind us of the beauty of winter in the Northland.

Mitch Goerdt grew up in Cherry and spent his first three decades living on the Iron Range, including a decade working in the area’s mines. In 2015, he moved away to travel and gain new experiences, but his heart remains rooted in the Range. Now living in South Carolina, Mitch makes several trips b...

Many Iron Rangers spend their winters somewhere with warmer temperatures and less snow, and Contributor Lee Iverson happens to be one of those Iron Rangers. Check out her story on the adventures she has had exploring the hiking trails near her home in Arizona.

My winter home lies near the Arizona Trail, a fact I had paid little attention to until I recognized the trail markers on my hikes in the Tucson area. The Arizona National Scenic Trail, the AZT for short, is an 800 plus mile path from Mexico to Utah

There is so much we learn from our family members as we grow up. Columnist Kallie Kantos shares some of the most valuable lessons she has learned from her loved ones.

I wasn’t sure what to write about this month, so I looked through my computer and found two pieces of writing I would like to share. What do they have in common? They are both about people in my family. The first is about my dad and the

When traveling somewhere new, it can be very interesting to learn some of the local history. Contributor Michael Connor shares some of the things he learned while visiting Colorado Springs.

The approach to the airport in Colorado Springs provided a stark contrast in the landscape below. As the airplane began its descent, I could see the Rocky Mountains to my right and prairie to my left. The mountains dominated the western skyline. I looked forward to writing a
