Essie was spayed today following her ultrasound..it was a life saving procedure for her..details to follow❤️ She is recovering nicely and hopefully will come home tomorrow❤️

Today is Giving Tuesday and this amazing young lady, Ms Essie, went to UC Davis - Large Animal Clinic - Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital for an assessment in preparation for her spay/tumor removal tomorrow❤️ Estimate is $1300-$1600😳

She has been on a journey to get healthy enough for this day…

Free Fred! Let’s help get him to where he belongs.

Dear Fred,

We, as a community, failed you. And for that we are so sorry. We are devastated, gutted, to find out your fate today.

You thought that with all the fame you brought to your captors, the least they could do is make sure you got neutered and ended up in a safe, forever home you longed for and deserved. Someone to make sure you had your daily belly rubs and where you were someone, not some-thing.

We at Broken Shovels did not have space for you to live here, but in working with other sanctuaries in Colorado, we made sure there was a sanctuary placement found for you, within hours. We knew Chris P’s Rescue and Rehabilitation Inc. was going to be perfect. A place to graze, a mud wallow, a place to be your natural self. Instead, your life will be a tiny pen, alone.

Somehow, a government funded agency who is supposed to have ALL animals lives and safety in their crosshairs made a deal with someone to take you and use you to make babies. You’ll never know your babies or their mothers, except a brief meeting for breeding. Your babies little bodies will be sent to slaughter, as you will be when they are “done” with you. What a horrible legacy to put in front of someone who fought for his own freedom and just wanted to be loved. Shame on those who’ve made crude jokes about you “living the good life” because your only purpose now, your whole existence, is to impregnate other pigs.

If you were a dog, Fred, you’d have state laws protecting you. You’d have been neutered before release or adopted with a neuter contract, so that you could live a healthier, more emotionally rewarding life with other pigs just like you, instead of having to live without companionship for the short life you’ll be given. That’s the law for dogs, but not for you, even though you are as intelligent as a three year old child, can solve complex puzzles, use language to communicate with others and have the potential for a rich emotional life.

Fred, we rely on state and local authorities and workers who are in charge of animals to have your best interests at heart. We get over 3000 requests for farm animals desperate to be rescued every year, and for once we thought you had some “breathing room” to get into your perfect home. Especially because you gave so much attention to your “rescuers”. The world called them “heroes!” We were fooled, too, Fred.

We received hundreds of messages and emails and phone calls about you. We told everyone it was being handled and you were safe. We were made into liars.

Aurora Animal Shelter, you promised us sanctuaries you’d do home checks for Fred’s new life. We find it hard to believe that the picture in the comments was what you believed was good for this pig. We found you a suitable sanctuary, you told us they were second on the list to another GOOD home.

Sure, Fred was born to be killed for food. He broke free and showed the world he was worthy of love and respect. And those in charge of his welfare stole that from him. We don’t even understand why. Was it nepotism? Did someone in the Aurora government help out a friend at the FFA? We’ve had several animals, including pigs, transferred from Aurora in the past. Why did you do this to sweet Fred??

We hope everyone who took the time to message us about Fred will let this shelter know they need to do right by Fred. Even if laws were not broken, this behavior is ethically abhorrent. You all sent me messages to “FREE FRED” but now is actually when he needs you the most. If there is any hope of undoing what was done, if there is a big heart at Aurora Animal Control, we hope this can still change. Please, we can do better than this.

If you currently make donations to this shelter, please consider this miscarriage of welfare for Fred, and give to an organization that keeps the same standards for all species, not just the ones they are legally required to.

UPDATE: best course of action is to individually contact Mayor Mike Coffman at [email protected] and express your deep concerns. Coffman, as I understand, is a compassionate person with a good record on animal issues.

Whenever we travel we always have our Pig Luv Co. t-shirts or sweatshirts with us. We welcome peoples questions and we always try to educate anyone who asks what it’s like owning an caring for a pig. We also always try to be the voice for those who don’t have one. We not only tell them about what a wonderful rescue and sanctuary Pig Luv Co is but about other rescues around the country. Because we know we are all in this together. We are blessed to belong to a Village of like minded people that once upon a time had a vision to protect and care for these amazing souls. So we ask all of you in honor of Esther the Wonder Pig and her beloved dads to be a voice, be an advocate, and show the world what a difference kindness and love can make in just one animals life. 🐷❤️

Sorry everyone for the late post. As you can see Walter is living it up in Texas! One of his human escorts came to celebrate with his buddies from high school. It was their 40 year reunion. Walter was such a sport listening to all the stories and mischief they all got into when they were young. Walter had to add to the stories about how he’s always so sweet to his mama but loves to bite everyone else in the leg or butt when they least expect it! 😂 Everyone had a good laugh. Tomorrow we’re all off to another great state to visit family. Walter said he can’t wait to see where is mama spend some time in her life. Stay tuned!

Our newest residents here at Pig Luv Co. Meet "The Oreo's" all Eight (5 girls and 3 boys) of them! They were surrendered to us after their mama rejected them. They were just 13 days old when we got them last Saturday and they are doing fabulous. We still have 2 that are syringe fed and keeping us on our toes. They really are the best babies even through multiple feedings a day and night. We are happy to say all of them have fabulous "forever" homes waiting for them as soon as they are old enough and spayed and neutered. 🐷❤️ ok

Happy Father’s Day to this handsome guy, Jack. Jack has been the most incredible father and companion to his girl Diane ever since they came to Pig Luv Co. They both were just babies themselves when we got them and Diane was already in the family way. Not only did this sweet boy stay by her side throughout her pregnancy he insisted on helping her raise all 8 babies. Here we are 11 months later and only one of their babies(Nancy) is still with them. Everyone else found their forever homes. I saw these two laying together(Jack and his little girl Nancy) and had to take these photos. As you can see he was right there in the beginning helping teach them how to play in the muddy puddles at 3 days old and helped teach them manners around their siblings and socialize them for their new families. We couldn’t have hoped for a better daddy than Jack. 🐷❤️

My heart just melted when I saw this! This is Rusty(one of Jack and Diane’s babies)from Pig Luv Co with his little human brother. Rusty is living his best life and is the most gentle, sweetest little pig ever. I just wish everyone could see what amazing family members pigs are when they are given the opportunity to blossom. It’s heartbreaking how many pigs are dropped off at animal shelters, dumped on the side of the road, left to fend for themselves on an abandoned properties, abused and neglected, or euthanized on purpose because people don’t do their research or give up on them. Then pig rescues/sanctuaries that are already so overcrowded and underfunded are expected to pick up the pieces and save these beautiful souls. People do your research before you buy that cute little piglet that has probably been taken away from their mother too early and sold as a micro mini teeny tiny pig. Rusty is the perfect example of what a pig can be like when given the proper care, socialization, time with his mother, and a loving family. What a great life for him and for his humans. I love you so much little guy and feel so blessed to have been part of your journey. 🐷❤️

Came out to see my little friends(Mr Gus, Miss Bea, and Mr Paul Paul) this evening and this is how they showed me they missed me last week while I was gone. Well at least that is what I want to believe. 😂 Nothing better than a little piggy pile on a Wednesday night. These babies have me wrapped around their little hooves and they know it! 🐷

UPDATE: Beatrice was able to get her girl surgery early due to a cancellation. Woo hoo!

This is Beatrice and she is a mess right now because she is in heat. She will be getting her girl surgery next month. Spaying them is so important not only does it keep them from reproducing but it keeps them from developing cancerous uterine or ovarian tumors which can be deadly. Here Luv Co we make sure all of our males are neutered asap and we get our girls spayed as soon as we possibly can. For the girls it is a riskier surgery and it is very expensive.
Plus if a pig is obese it can take a very long time to get the weight off of them in order to even be considered healthy enough for the surgery. If you would like to contribute to Beatrice's much needed girl surgery please visit Pig Luv Co website for several ways to help.
