Utica University Tangerine The Tangerine is Utica University's student-run newspaper and online news source published by and for Utica students.

We print biweekly during the academic year. The Tangerine has been a part of the Utica University community since the school was founded in 1946. The Tangerine’s weekly editorial content is decided by members of the editorial staff. The adviser may join discussions but does not shape the direction of news coverage. Letters to the editor are welcome from all members of the Utica University communit

The ability of college athletes to profit off their name, image, and likeness has dramatically changed the landscape of college athletics. Athletes can now sign endorsement deals, make money off their social media, and profit from their popularity.

While these opportunities offer clear benefits, concerns have arisen about how they will affect student-athletes, their schools, and fairness in college sports. Some members of Utica University’s baseball team express a mixture of excitement and concern about the changes. ⚾️

The enrollment for Utica University’s new Digital Media Marketing program is now open for the Spring 2025 semester.

The Digital Media Marketing major is housed within business management programs and provides a management foundation with digital media marketing courses. It replaces the former Public Relations and Marketing program, with public relations still offered as a concentration in Communication and Media.

The Tangerine would like to congratulate David Chanatry, Distinguished Professor of Journalism, on his retirement effective at the end of the semester.

Professor Chanatry helped develop Utica University’s broadcasting curriculum and oversaw the plan to build the Simon Convergence Center. He is a strong supporter of student media and has always championed The Tangerine.

We are grateful for his support and the legacy he leaves. Happy Retirement, Professor Chanatry!!

At 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 28, Campus Safety was notified that Greenman Field, home of Utica University Softball team, was vandalized with spray-painted graffiti.

Shad Crowe, vice president for Facilities and Emergency Management, said the school contacted the Utica Police Department, and they are working closely with the city of Utica to fix the damage, which was likely linked to a nearby homeless encampment.

The St. Luke’s Hospital campus has been vacant since October 2023, leaving around 53 acres of potential redevelopment across the street from Utica University. Four engagement sessions were held so far that have had more than 400 in-person attendees.

Utica University President Todd Pfannestiel is advocating for student-friendly spaces and safe access. While still in planning, the project aims to transform the area into a dynamic space for both students and the broader community.

On Nov. 6, several Utica University students received racist text messages as part of a nationwide harassment effort targeting individuals of color.

At least 10 students received these text messages near Election Day and more students of color have received them since, according to Xavier Moore, president of Brothers On a New Direction, historian of the Black Student Union and vice president of Student Government Association.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, these text messages originated from difficult to trace phone numbers and the identity of the offenders have yet to be publicly identified.
