Films on Thursday kicks off tonight at 7 p.m. in MacFarlane Auditorium located in DePerno Hall. All films are free and open to the public. The Tangerine would like to acknowledge our senior staff who are members of the class of 2024 and accept their degrees today at Utica University's undergraduate commencement ceremony. 🍊🗞️🎊

Diana Sidorevich Nortje, of Utica, is a Communication and Media major with a journalism concentration. Diana was involved with The Tangerine and WPNR 90.7 FM, where she brought professionalism and style to every project she worked on. She joined the Tangerine staff with a passion for writing food columns, growing into a strong Managing Editor who helped guide the staff in all areas of newspaper production. She also completed an internship at Holy Trinity Publications in Jordanville. As she embarks on a journalism career, Diana will no doubt make an impact in any newsroom fortunate to have her.

Kayden Lamphere, of Poland, is a double major in Adolescence Education and English with minors in literature and creative writing. He was president of the League of Extraordinary Nerds club. As the newspaper’s Senior News Reporter, Kayden was a crucial part of The Tangerine’s news team this year and was always there to help - even designing the newspaper when needed. Kayden will return to Utica University this fall as a graduate student. Future English students are lucky that “Mr. L” is heading their way.

Charles Buckley, of Ilion, has been a member of The Tangerine staff since his first semester at Utica and remained loyal. Charlie started as Tangerine Clerk and advanced into Senior Feature Writer. A CMM major concentrating in creativity studies, he was heavily involved in theater and with several other campus organizations, including UticaTV, SGA, and was a resident assistant. Charlie’s goal is to be a theater critic and his passion for the arts will lead him there.

Eleanor Berkhoudt, of New Hartford, joined The Tangerine as a staff writer and quickly became Social Media Manager. As a CMM major with a public relations concentration, she aspires to work in public relations and has already completed an internship at Hospice & Palliative Care. Any future employer will find that Ellie is a joy to have on their team because she is as sweet as she is smart.

Utica University Communication and Media students won two first place awards and an honorable mention from the Syracuse Press Club at the organization’s 2024 Professional Recognition Awards Dinner on Saturday, May 4.

Former Tangerine Editor-in-Chief Mickale Thompson, a December 2023 graduate, won first place in the Student Print/Digital Sports Story category for his Tangerine article "'We're certainly very white' Inside the lack of diversity in Utica University's athletic programs."

The JLM 461 Multimedia Web Design class won first place in the Student Best Use of Multimedia category for its Utica Parks and You multimedia project.

Thompson also won an Honorable Mention in the Student Print/Digital News Story category for the Tangerine article "AAUP-Utica files discriminatory grievance against Utica University.

Utica University student journalists have won 10 Syracuse Press Club Awards in the past five years. Judges from partner press clubs around the United States review and rank the top entries for each category.

Following their third-place finish in the Empire 8 Fall Championships, the men’s golf team is off to a great start to their spring season. The team finished third in the Empire 8 Championships at the Hershey Country Club, in Hershey, Pennsylvania on April 13 and 14. The Pioneers will travel to Oswego on Saturday, April 27 at 11 a.m. and Sunday, April 28 at 10:30 a.m. for the Oswego Spring Invitational.

The Utica Dance Team will host Pie-A-Dancer Fundraiser on Friday, April 26 from noon - 4 p.m. in Strebel Student Center. The Utica Dance team has been bringing excitement to university events since 2018. In addition to performing at sporting events and other campus events, the team participates in collegiate dance competitions. On April 20, Utica hosted a showcase in the Clark Athletic Center and on March 2, the girls hit the road for an exciting day of dance at the Brockport Collegiate Dance Competition.

Utica’s baseball team reflects upon its achievements as they near the end of their season. At the start of the season, senior Jason Story earned Empire 8 Player of the Week. Last week, freshman Jacob Scalise also earned Empire 8 Rookie of the Week. The team played four games last week, winning 11-2 during a doubleheader against Vassar College. Graduate student Jane Fahy set a new school record of 14.32m. for shot put after breaking her previous record. The toss earned her first place in the Hamilton Continental Invite on Saturday, March 30.

Fahy’s coaches and teammates say her level of commitment for her sport is unmatched. Assistant coach Dave Brannigan believes that Fahy will become Utica’s first national champion this outdoor season.

The Harold T. Clark Athletic Center will undergo renovations in the upcoming semesters to update the entire building. March Associates, an architecture company based in the Utica area has officially been awarded a contract to begin work on the renovations. At this time, there are no specific proposals, designs, or plans to detail, as the March Associates team needs to complete their assessment. Further updates will be provided in the coming months as the project develops.
