P.J. O'Dea has left this earthly plane. He departed Monday evening,
We have many happy memories of P.J. on the show. He was great friends with my Dad, Mike O'Connor & their lively sparring over Irish sport always captivated. P.J. was a fierce advocate of the G.A.A. and a legendary player. His work to familiarize folks with his homeplace of Kilrush, Co. Clare is still appreciated today. P.J. was the middle of 8 children and the last surviving member of the family. He achieved 97yrs walking this planet and his footsteps are still reverberating. Peace to P.J.-he's home now.

Memories, memories, memories! In August 2010, a few months after we opened, the Irish American News published a great article on the Pub and featured us on the front page of their monthly newspaper/magazine. The picture itself was taken when we were just opening, and we had to gather as many people on premises as possible for the photo. This may still look like a relatively large group of employees, but it was much, much bigger than shown here. When both the Pub and the neighboring Park Avenue Wine Bar first opened we had 106 total people on staff... and to be honest we needed all of 'em at the time!

Back to the Irish American News - for all that you need to know that's Irish, this free monthly newspaper is available in most Irish Pubs throughout the Chicagoland area - we've been carrying it since we opened - and over the years it's also spread through much of the nation. Their website https://irishamericannews.com/ and the page also includes links to the publication and of course up-to-date news.

By the way, the Pub has been advertising with the Irish American News for the entire time we've been open. They've been a great friend to us and the Irish communities.

The business, civic and Irish community of Chicago have lost a champion with the death of James J. O’Connor Sr. Following his service in the US Air Force, Jim had a stellar business career starting as a lineman at Commonwealth Edison in 1963 and rising to CEO and serving as one of the youngest and longest serving CEOs of a public company in his 18 years of leadership from 1980-1998. He was recognized as an outstanding corporate director as a board member of American National Can, the Chicago Stock Exchange, First Chicago, the Tribune company to name a few.

Graveside Service Saturday, August 5 from 10:30am to 11am, Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 301 Chicago Ave., Evanston IL 60202

As his obituary stated, “… the achievement that he was most proud of was serving as the Founding Chairman of the Big Shoulders Fund since its inception in 1986. Under Jim’s active leadership, Big Shoulders Fund has raised over $600M in support of 92 Catholic schools in under-resourced communities, serving over 25,000 children in Chicago and Northwest Indiana.”

Jim was proud of his Irish heritage and served as President and long-time board member of the Irish Fellowship Club of Chicago and was honored as a 2019 inductee into the Irish American Hall of Fame.

Jim O’Connor will be fondly remembered as a key civic leader supporting essential Chicago organizations including the 100 Club of Illinois where he served as President, Northwestern University, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Chicago Urban League and the United Way among others. Said his son, Fred O’Connor, “He was able to attract money and resources to important things in the city. He was from an era where a lot of business leaders were civic leaders, and they cared deeply.”

On Friday February 24, 2023 Larry Kirwan received the Irish American Business Chamber & Network (IABCN) 2023 Uachtarán (President) Award in Philadelphia from Irish Ambassador to the USA, Geraldine Byrne Nason at a Union League luncheon. (Photo Tom Keenan)

The following is Larry’s acceptance speech:

Thank you for this wonderful award, Madam Ambassador, and to the IABCN, in particular Lisa Maloney, Alanna Barry and the inimitable Bill McLaughlin.

I’ve always held the view that an artist’s work is less to do with entertaining, and more to do with effecting change. When Chris Byrne and I formed Black 47 in 1989, it was a bad time for the Civil Rights struggle in the North of Ireland. The war had been going on for 20 years and it seemed like there was no solution.

We looked to Irish America for a solution, and saw a great big slumbering giant badly in need of an awakening. And we did that through playing to Irish-American youth in their pubs, clubs, and festivals across the country, and reintroducing heroes like James Connolly, but less of the patriot, more of the social agitator for fair wages, and equal rights for women, Michael Collins in the song Big Fellah, Countess Markievicz in Touched By Fire, and even Danny Boy, but with Danny recast as a tough as nails, gay Irish construction worker who would take your head off if he felt you harbored even an ounce of homophobia. We put Hip-Hop, Reggae, and Funk beats beneath the songs, and shot it all full of undiluted Rock ‘n’ Roll, because every generation needs its own music to dance to.

And it worked. We helped rekindle the radical heart of Irish-America, and together we all played our part in supporting the peace process that led to a just peace in 1998.

So, I’d like to dedicate this award to Irish-American youth, and also Irish-America in general, for there would not have been a peace process without Irish-America. Charles Stewart Parnell knew that, as did Michael Collins and other 20th Century leaders.

On a personal note, I’d like to dedicate the award to a very old and dear friend, who was the best guitarist in my hometown of Wexford. He emigrated to the US and settled in the greater Philadelphia area. His name was Robbie Furlong and I had hoped he’d be here for this event, but he passed away some weeks back. Here’s to you, Robbie, smiling down on us, your Stratocaster strapped to your shoulders, you picked a great area to live in. And here’s to you, Philadelphia, thank you for all your support, friendship, and hospitality down the years. Long life to the IABCN!
