What author Jessica Fein wants you to be able to take away from her book BREATH TAKING: A Memoir of Family, Dreams, and Broken Genes---(available on Bookshop.org, Amazon, or ask your local bookseller)

JF: I’d really like people to take away that we don’t have to be totally sorrowful, or completely intent on fixing things. We can have joy and sorrow at the same time and we can be happy even when we’re decimated. That’s been my experience and something I’ve learned through what I’ve been through.

Let There Be Play’s creative approach helps children develop a sense of wonder about the Bible by employing storytelling, dramatic play, arts and crafts. Author Jonathan Shmidt Chapman uses his extensive theater training to inspire cues for imaginative play. Questions and conversation starters help kids relate themes in the Bible stories to their own lives, with a focus on character growth and values. Conversation prompts and activity ideas encourage parents to engage in hands-on play and learning with their children. Each chapter includes biblical citation for the source of the included story, the Hebrew notation for the name of the specific portion, and a materials list that features readily available household items and toys.

BREATH TAKING is about the inspiration—and a bit of guidance—to cope on a daily basis. At the heart of the story, Fein describes the joy that came from reshaping dreams by focusing not on what her daughter had lost—her ability to walk, to read, to speak, to even breathe on her own—but on the things she was able to do. BREATH TAKING shows us that even in the face of tragedy, we can still choose how to live.

In this heartfelt yet clear-eyed memoir, Fein maps both her journey to becoming an adoptive mom and the roller coaster ride of loving and caring for a terminally ill child, persevering when the simple act of taking a breath can become an act of courage.

Our tradition says a “mixed multitude” of humanity left Egypt, brought together by the bitterness of shared servitude and a collective dream of freedom. We eat maror to remind ourselves of this bitterness, to better savor the sweetness of freedom we have.

She proudly celebrates both her Korean and Jewish heritage. See how she and other modern heroes connect to the themes and messages of the Passover story in the new Heroes Haggadah.
