Such a simple thing. Why didn’t we think of it before?

Today is the 32nd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)! To celebrate, we're sharing one of our newest acquisitions, "Do you want us here or not" (2020) by Shannon Finnegan. Part of a series, the bench is a response to the scarcity of seating in art museums and galleries.

From the artist: “We often think about protest in very ableist terms—standing up for something or marching. But, of course, there is also a long history of sitting as a form of protest...(my) benches give visitors an opportunity to voice their opinion about seating while also offering them comfort and rest.”

The bench joins the MFA’s long-standing "Please Be Seated" program. Founded in 1975, it was the first museum program in the country to commission contemporary artists to make benches and chairs for visitors to use that were also acquired into the Museum’s permanent collection.

This is such a good idea and a great way to engage museum visitors. ❣️

This weekend, artist Lorenzo Bussi collaborated with cleaning workers to protest poor working conditions and low pay at the glitzy contemporary art museum.

It's been a tough stretch for cultural organizations around the world, but after an uncertain first pandemic holiday season in 2020, it seems that more folks are looking toward kindness and recovery.
