Key West the Newspaper (The Blue Paper) The Blue Paper, aka "Key West The Newspaper" brings in-depth investigative journalism back to Key We But that war has been over for quite some time.

The Blue Paper (launched 2013) is the "sequel" to Dennis Cooper's "Key West The Newspaper" (KWTN) that shut down in 2012. The Blue Paper is much like the old KWTN, but with even more in-depth investigative journalism -- it takes The Blue Paper to the next level. One look (at http://TheBluePaper.com) and we are sure you will agree.

Following is the descriptio

n provided up through Dennis Reeve Cooper's retirement and "final shutdown" of the original Key West The Newspaper (KWTN)

Dr. Cooper gives a short history of weekly newspaper publishing in Key West:

Once upon a time, there were lots of weekly newspapers in Key West. In fact, there were so many that some called the competition the "paper wars." When the first issue of KWTN hit the streets on January 7, 1994, there were already two other non-daily newspapers on the scene: Island Life and Solares Hill. Both of those papers took long vacations during the slow summer season. KWTN was the first true weekly in Key West, publishing 52 weeks per year. Island Life soon went out of business and Solares Hill, in financial difficulty, was absorbed by the Key West Citizen and is now published as a Citizen Sunday insert. Other newspapers came and went: Mark Howell's Islander, Winston Burrell's Island News, and Charlie Ramos' Morning Star. And there were others we can't even remember. They failed because they had no real reason to exist. Our reason to exist is to try to make a difference. And we've been doing that for more than 15 years. Key West the Newspaper is the island's oldest independent weekly newspaper. From the beginning, KWTN has also been designed to be an extremely effective advertising-carrying vehicle. The "investigative" niche we've carved out has not been accidental. The idea is to attract readers--lots of
readers--readers who look for KWTN every Friday morning. More readers equals more exposure for ads in the paper. Interesting concept, huh? A newspaper designed to deliver readers to its advertisers. Here's one of our favorite advertising stories: A major developer here, who advertised with us for years before hsi projects approached sellout, once told us, "I disagree with you much of the time--especially when you criticize me. But I have to advertise in Key West the Newspaper because everybody reads it. And I'm trying to sell houses!"

Whether you're trying to sell houses or something else, we invite you to put your ad where the readers are. Want to talk about the possibilities? Call me personally. Dennis Reeves Cooper, Ph.D., Publisher

Enough? Are the Keys at capacity?

Let’s talk to the expert. Join Last Stand for an insightful conversation with Richard Grosso, a renowned expert on land development and environmental attorney.

As Monroe County embarks on a new campaign for additional ROGOs/BPAS (building allocations), Last Stand feels that any additional development must be extremely limited and directly tied to improvements in water quality, traffic congestion, infrastructure, “true” affordable workforce housing, and safe hurricane evacuation standards. While this was supposed to be how the original program was structured, little to no enforcement has occurred.

87-foot “Solomon Sea” took fire Saturday morning in Key West harbor. Ted Bautista and first mate, Austin Iwohara, narrowly escaped, rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard.

“I grabbed the fire extinguisher and rushed to the forward cabin,” said Ted. “In less than a minute the floor was so hot the paint started to blister. I was barefoot and I couldn’t even go back. Austin was trying to save the cat and the birds. We had five birds. But there was no time.”
