Germans have long sat comfortably atop the world of competitive forklift driving, a point of national pride. There are songs, tattoos and fully functioning kid’s models dedicated to the humble industrial vehicle. The best drivers are treated like rockstars.

But Germany’s supremacy is under threat from the same forces sparking existential angst in the national economy: competition from abroad.

Miners are plundering one of the biggest mother lodes of gold in Latin America, led by gunmen who seized tunnels from a Chinese mining giant.

These rogue miners are getting access, protection and equipment from the Gulf Clan, an armed militia of some 7,000 men that moves co***ne and migrants along routes headed to the U.S. The group seizes tunnels owned by China's Zijin Mining Group on behalf of illegal miners in exchange for a cut of the spoils.

The scale of plunder is stunning. Zijin estimated that last year it lost more than 3.2 tons of gold, worth around $200 million and equal to 38% of the mine’s total production.

“The wages are very good, but you risk it all,” said Erik Dubier, a 22-year-old illegal miner. “You can get trapped. There are rock slides. And there’s combat every day.”

From Wall Street Journal Opinion: The Gaetz fiasco is a reminder that there remains a bright line between a candidate who is aggressive, committed and professional and one who is unthinking, partisan and a liability, writes Kimberley Strassel.
