Borderlands Theater is casting a PAID, Two-week development workshop of a new musical. July 12. 16-27. The two-week development workshop culminates in a public concert sharing on July 27, 2024 directed by Chach Snook, musical direction by Jon Heras. This workshop period will focus on the musical’s songs.

We’ll share sides once you sign up to audition, and a demo to learn 16 bars of the song that corresponds to the role that you’re interested in, or prepare 16 bars of a song (approx. 30 seconds)

Anita by Milta Ortiz, with music by Quetzal Guerrero is a Latinx musical that centers female characters and pays homage to the intermingling of the Southwest borderlands with cumbia, bolero/jazz and pop/R&B fusions. Anita is about the power of joy to create a sense of home and belonging.

While the musical is primarily in English, some basic knowledge of Spanish is helpful. PLEASE NOTE: THE CHILDREN IN THE MUSICAL WILL BE PLAYED BY HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE-AGED ACTORS. ALL ACTORS MUST BE AT LEAST 16 YEARS OF AGE.

Anita Fuentes 12 yrs old, sassy and vibrant, le echa muchas ganas, immigrated from El Salvador with her parents.

Luz Dorada, mid 30’s, five generations Mexican American, going for gold but doesn’t realize how golden her life could be.

Esme, 15 years old, Esme is short for Esmeralda, green with envy for everything she’s been cheated out of.

Carmen, 13 years old, helpful and kind, a leader.

Lisa, 8 years old, hardly speaks, traumatized, and smart.

Nanita, 6 years old, adorable new arrival to the shelter.

Mari Vega, 20’s, a badass chola youtuber; for this reading multicast as pupusa waitress, office staff. (Performs a cumbia rap song.)

Manuel Fuentes, mid 30’s, a helpful janitor, multicast as Papi, Anita’s dad, John Panchez, photographer, pupusa customer and townsfolk.

Applications are open for the Stowe Story Labs $50,000 Short Film Production Grant. Developed in partnership with PAGE International Screenwriting Awards, and working with partners including ARRI, the Galway Film Fleadh, Seed&Spark, the Sidewalk Film Festival, and WeShort, the winning project will receive a $50,000 Stowe administered grant to support the development of a 10 minute short film. This competitively awarded grant presents a life-changing opportunity for a screenwriter or production team to make a well-financed short film with mentorship throughout the process, including support on building a festival campaign and post-festival distribution program.

Interested in exhibiting work at the Tucson Museum of Art? Arizona artists over 18 years of age working in any media are welcome to submit artwork(s) to be considered for Arizona Biennial 2024. This exhibition will be on view at the Tucson Museum of Art from October 19, 2024—February 9, 2025. The works juried into the exhibition will be selected entirely from digital images or video submissions by Natasha Becker, curator for the Arts of Africa at the Fine Arts Museums in San Francisco.
