The region collectively known as New England typically encompasses the following states, in alphabetical order: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont, covering almost 74,000 square miles. Boston is easily the largest New England city, with notable history, treasures, and links to the past such as the Boston Tea Party, the city in which the disposable safety razor was invented, the country’s first subway system, the place in which both the telephone and Tupperware were created and of course, the ominous Green Monster...

A fond look back at the colorful railroads, regionals, and short lines that once served New England in the late 20th century.

In Second Quarter 2023 (Issue No. 34), I talked about how Yardmaster Charlie Mullen told me that when things got tough at Packerton, Charlie would let “The Brothers” figure out an easy way to get the work done. After all, it would benefit all of the workers to work together to solve a problem. Everyone helped each other. In my opinion, this is one of the most valuable things Charlie taught me...

Penn Central! It is hard to believe that a railroad who had Baldwins and Fairbanks-Morse diesels on their roster, assigned F-units to freight trains and sets of E-units to mail trains, used a fleet of big ALCO’s to haul ore trains to steel mills and maintained a class of vintage streamlined electrics was one of the most despised in history!

For all of Penn Central’s woes, it still was a very interesting railroad to photograph and experience. You had a good chance of catching interesting motive power and the many of the signals, towers and other goodies from the golden era of railroading.
