"Biggest Mistake I See Creatives Make With Outreach"

Amateurs make decisions based on their feelings. Professionals stick to their commitments.

This mindset shift changed everything for me.

I stopped thinking short-term and started thinking long-term.

Investing in gear and in education/coaching became easy since I knew it would pay off down the road.

I was building up the company and myself.

I knew big stuff takes time.

I stayed patient. I showed up consistently.

I worked on my dream every day.

Looking back five years, I honestly can't believe how far things have come.

Going from painfully average to helping thousands of creatives live their dreams.

It's been a wild ride. I can't wait to see what happens next.

This post is aimed at Chris from 2019-2021. This was the hardest part of my entire entrepreneurial journey.

I didn't know if what I was doing would work.
Was I taking the right steps?
Was I meant to live an incredibly average life?

Truth is, I never knew if going down this path would lead to anything.

But I knew one thing for sure.

If I quit, it would guarantee failure. I couldn't give up.

If I didn't quit, I couldn't lose.

I get it. Early on in your creative career you need to take any client you can get.

But once you get stability, it's time to be picky about clients.

A nightmare client is going to take up all your time... not to mention all the headaches.

During the discovery call, ask questions to figure out if they'll be a good fit.

"What happened to the last photographer or videographer you worked with?" usually shows you what kind of client they are.

Creatives don't like to make it about the money. But truth is, that's what it's all about. Here's why.

Every business needs money to run. And the more we make, the more we can help our clients. And that's what we want to do. Help our clients.

But if we don't make it about the money here's what happens. We feel stressed financially and our creativity suffers as a result. We don't have the financial means to support ourselves so how can we support our clients?

If we don't make it about the money, we can never hire a team. We won't be able to provide work to people that need it.

Our clients will get worse results, choose not to work with us, and go with a photographer/videographer who knows their financials and can run a business.

Maybe you hate money. Fine. Go out there and make $200k and donate it all to something that's important to you.

Because the type of person you need to become to actually make that $200k is going to be worth far more than the $200k itself.

The goal is to help more people. And capital makes that possible.

The lie that was fed to me when I was starting my photography business ⬇️

"Post on social media and brands will reach out if your stuff is good!"

This same lie gets spread year after year.

Creatives post into the algorithm with no results. They post for months and years with zero clients to show for it.

Then they burn out or give up because they haven't landed any clients.

They blame their portfolio. They blame the social media companies...

But the truth is, their portfolio is good enough to land clients. They're just using the wrong methods.

Posting to social is a great strategy but it's going to take 1-2 years for anything to happen.

Most people aren't that patient.

What's the solution? Taking control of getting your portfolio in front of clients.

Reaching out to them. A calculated, systemized way to get eyeballs on your portfolio. Pitching brands in a way that feels authentic and helpful to them.

And once they show any bit of interest, you hop on a call, dig into their problems, become the best solution for them, and close that deal.

But 99% of you reading won't do that. And that's okay.

That leaves the clients for the 1% that will.

Get after it.

If you're under six figures as a creative you don't need to do anything fancy. Stop offering 5 different services. You don't need 3 different niches. Forget about 10-step automations.

Basics done consistently and done well will take you to your first six-figure year. Then get fancy.
