USDA Under Secretary Jenny Lester Moffitt to Visit the Douglas County School District to Highlight USDA Investments into Youth Agricultural Education and to Meet with Specialty Crop Industry Stakeholders

USDA Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs Jenny Lester Moffitt will visit Douglas County School District Legacy Campus in Lone Tree, Colorado, on Tuesday, Jan. 30, to attend the district’s agricultural education program, which is supported by USDA’s Specialty Crop Block Grant Program (SCBGP), and to present the Agriculture in the Classroom’s Outstanding Teacher Award.

The event will highlight Pioneer Elementary's K-5 STEAM program which educates students about agriculture through raising chickens, hydroponics, gardening, outdoor classrooms, and outdoor field trips. The program receives support from Colorado’s Ag in the Classroom Literacy Project which provides educational content and resources on Colorado agriculture. The Ag in the Classroom program is an example of the many K-12 agricultural education programs across the country funded by SCBGP to promote specialty crops by educating children on the importance of agriculture and healthy eating. Today, USDA announced $72.9 million available in grant funding for this year’s SCBGP.

Under Secretary Moffitt and Colorado Commissioner of Agriculture Kate Greenberg will also meet with specialty crops producers and business owners to discuss how USDA can better meet the industry’s needs. The roundtable discussion is part of USDA’s outreach for its Specialty Crop Competitiveness Initiative. The initiative is a new effort to further support the U.S. specialty crops sector and increase the competitiveness of its products.

Navy Outreach and Diversity leaders will visit Prairie View High School in Henderson, CO on Wednesday, Jan. 17 and Brighton High School in Brighton, CO on Friday, Jan. 19, in search of high-ability students who have what it takes to excel in high-demand STEM fields, such as nuclear engineering, cryptology, IT and health care. The Navy also will share information about its $180,000 ROTC Scholarship Program, which pays full college tuition for students with exceptional academic and leadership credentials. The main attraction will be the Nimitz, a mobile, state-of the-art virtual reality experience that simulates an actual high-speed Navy SEAL mission.
