Do you have your tickets for our Steve Earle show yet? WNCW is bringing this living legend to The Foundation Performing Arts Center on our campus at Isothermal Community College in Spindale, NC on Friday, June 21st at 8pm. How often can you see a great show and support your favorite public radio station at the same time? Visit this link for tickets: https://www.etix.com/ticket/p/94801147/steve-earle-acoustic-show-spindale-foundation-performing-arts-center.

Steve Earle is one of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters of his generation. A protege of legendary songwriters Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, he quickly became a master storyteller in his own right, with his songs being recorded by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris, The Pretenders, and countless others. 1986 saw the release of his record, Guitar Town, which shot to number one on the country charts and is now regarded as a classic of the Americana genre.

Most recently, Earle’s 1988 hit Copperhead Road was made an official state song of Tennessee in 2023. Subsequent releases like The Revolution Starts...Now (2004), Washington Square Serenade (2007), and TOWNES (2009) received consecutive GRAMMY® Awards. His most recent album, Jerry Jeff (2022) consisted of Earle’s versions of songs written by Jerry Jeff Walker, one of his mentors.

Earle has published both a novel I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt 2011) and Dog House Roses, a collection of short stories (Houghton Mifflin 2003). Earle produced albums for other artists such as Joan Baez (Day After Tomorrow)and Lucinda Williams (Car Wheels On A Gravel Road)

As an actor, Earle has appeared in several films and had recurring roles in the HBO series The Wire and Tremé. In 2017, Earle appeared in the off-Broadway play Samara, for which he also wrote a score that The New York Times described as “exquisitely subliminal.” Earle wrote music for and appeared in Coal Country, for which he was nominated for a Drama Desk Award. Earle is the host of the weekly show Hard Core Troubadour on Sirius Radio’s Outlaw Country channel.

In 2020, Earle was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. And in 2023, Steve was honored by the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music.

Live in Studio B on Monday morning – Robert Earl Keen

He was raised in Houston, and after graduating from Texas A&M in 1978 (with Lyle Lovett as one of his roommates), Robert Earl Keen embarked on his career with a move to Austin and his first album No Kinda Dancer five years later. Songs like “The Road Goes On Forever”, “Gringo Honeymoon” and “Merry Christmas From the Family” brought him the recognition he deserved… as did his placement on the 1997 cover of the Gavin Report radio trade magazine that introduced the genre of Americana music that he and we at WNCW have embraced since before it was named. It’s surprising that in all of our years of loving Robert’s work, we’ve never had him by for a visit. Until now! He may be officially retired now from full-time touring, but we kick off the month of June with a live session from Robert as he heads towards the Neighborhood Theatre in Charlotte for an evening show (starting at 8pm, with Chuck Cannon opening.) On this “Western Chill” tour, he and his band will be performing both new songs, and 1998’s Picnic and 2003’s Farm Fresh Onions front to back in their entirety (alternating albums each night; perhaps we’ll suss out which one will be at the Neighborhood.) The party never ends!

Live today at 11 am: Menage

The Asheville music scene in the early '00s was a thriving one, particularly with talented singer/songwriters who played various venues of the day, particularly the newly bustling West Asheville. Enter Menage, which was formed in 2003 by Sarah Roberts and Mary Ellen Davis. They may have gone dormant over the past few years, but they're back! And since so many good things come in threes, they've added Melissa Hyman, who is also known for her bass, cello, and vocal work with The Moon & You and others. Both of those acts, plus Amanda Anne Platt, will perform at the Grey Eagle in Asheville on Thursday the 6th.
