A quick review of the GX L3 Lithium Battery P*P Air Compressor
https://amzn.to/3pA7bC6
For a little background, I have owned a few different compressors, including an Omega Super Charger, Air Venturi Nomad and an older design GX-CS3. Currently, I use my Omega for charging my SCBA tank, and my Nomad for use in the field. The GX L3 may actually change that.
The GX L3 runs off of two 18v lithium batteries. This is what makes this compressor stand apart from others on the market. These batteries are compatible with Makita 18v batteries, making it easy to source spares. Using the compressor, you can expect about an hour of run time off of a full charge during the normal lifecycle of these batteries. Expect this to drop after about 300-500 full charge cycles, just due to the nature of how the 18650 LiPO cells in these batteries function. The nice thing is these are a very popular battery type, so replacements or spares are easy to find (You can also pick up adapters for other big name tool brands that will allow them to plug in to Makita tools, so that may be an option to consider as well. Pro Tip - There is no difference between 18v and 20v Lithium Ion batteries. The magic is in whether they are basing the voltage on their nominal charge or maximum charge. Both use the same configuration of cells.)
In testing, the compressor took under 6 minutes (closer to 5) to fully charge a 215CC Benjamin Marauder. The gauge on the compressor matched the one that is on my P*P (and I know to be accurate).
Make sure to bleed the compressor between each use, and if you have to stop the pump mid fill for any reason, make sure to bleed the compressor before starting it up again. These portable compressors need a little extra TLC sometimes.
I appreciate the handle on the top, as it allows me an easy attachment point for strapping down this compressor in the back of my truck, as well as for carrying it around.
The most important thing here though to remember is that this compressor is not designed to fill large SCBA tanks. This compressor is meant just for recharging on device air cylinders and smaller CF bottles like those found on the FX Impact and the like. Anything over 1000cc is going to be too large for this compressor.
Finally, the duty cycle on this compressor is important. To extend the life of this compressor, you’ll want to use it at most for 15 minutes before giving it a 10 minute break to cool down.
Pros -
-Portable, all in one solution. Easy way to extend your shooting time without the hassle of having to bring along an external tank.
-Easy to source spare batteries.
-Can fill on one battery while charging the other.
-Fast fill times. Under 6 minutes to fill a 215cc air cylinder (Benjamin Marauder)
-Hose has a built in swivel, comes with a hanging clip, and hose end cap.
-Pressure gauge with auto-shutoff. Set your pressure, then let the compressor go to work!
Cons -
-Loud. With great power, comes great loudness. This is par for the course with any of the smaller portable compressors, so nothing unreasonable here.
-No moisture filter. Compressors add moisture to your system. If you are using this with high end/price point equipment, consider adding an in-line water filter to your setup.
-No AC power option. Would be nice, but that is not what this compressor is designed for.
-Short fill hose. Long enough to be functional, but a tad longer would have helped. Easy enough to get an extension for.
-Batteries can be limiting, especially for extended outings.
-Batteries lack a charge indicator
