Call it what you want. Perspective? Field of View? Wide? Tight? Let's learn what it all means!
In the photo/video world, we use lenses to show different perspectives.
WIDE vs. TIGHT
A 'wide' lens, in the 16mm to 24mm range, gives us a wide perspective. It allows us to see the subject's surroundings and gives us a feeling of openness and connection to the subject. These lenses are great for establishing shots, landscapes, and in-the-action shots.
A 'tight' lens, in the 70mm to 105mm range, gives us a narrower perspective. It compresses the surroundings and isolates the subject. These lenses are great for portraits and detail shots.
COMPRESSION
A 'wide' lens (16-24mm) has less compression. It will make the background appear far away, farther off in the distance than it really is.
A 'tight' lens (75/85mm+) has more compression. It will make the background appear closer, nearer to the lens than it really is.
In the video, watch how much the background changes. For reference, I'm standing almost 30 yards away from the corn row.
DISTORTION
A 'wide' lens (16-24mm) will distort objects close to the lens and objects far to the left/right of center.
A 'tight' lens (70-105mm) will give a more natural look with significantly less distortion.
In the video, watch how the shape/distortion of my face changes between the two shots.
