“…And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.”
1 Kings 19:12

There was the familiar “squeak” as I slowly opened the door into the reception area to call back my next patient. There was only one lady sitting there, so I assumed it was her. “Melody?” The lady continued to look down at her phone, not even a flinch. I spoke a little louder the second time. “Melody?” Again, no response whatsoever.

Confused, I closed the door and went to the front desk.
“That IS HER, sitting there, right?” I asked. “Yes, it is” was the receptionist’s response.
So again, I slowly opened the door that could use a little WD 40… “Melody?” I called, quite loudly, this time. Still nothing.
I walked the short distance over to where she was and leaned towards her. It was only after I again said her name she jumped and responded. I asked if she was ok, and she assured me that she was, but she had been deeply engrossed in her phone.
In 30 years of dental hygiene, that was a first. We both kind of chuckled about it and went on with her appointment.

And I got to thinking.

The Bible tells us that God spoke to Elijah in a “still small voice.” It was a whisper to Elijah from God. And Elijah heard it because he was close, and he was listening.
God still wants to talk to His children today. The question is, are we living close enough to God to hear? And are we listening?
We’ve all seen the little saying, “Make time for quiet moments because God whispers and the world is loud.”
Think of the “loudness” of the world. The busy-ness. The things it would seem are tools of Satan used to deafen our ears to the sound of God’s whispers. “Things” that collect so easily in our lives that not only take up space and time, but actually draw us away from the kind of relationship the Lord wants with us.
As I called “Melody” … she absolutely COULD have heard, but she was so wrapped up in something else.
How many times do we miss it?
How many opportunities?
How many blessings?
What does God have to do to get our attention?

A simple thought today, but I want to hear that still small voice. I don’t want the voice of God to have to compete with all the other “noise” of this world.
Living close… and listening! That’s my prayer for all of us! 🙏

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. Proverbs 3:5

A few days ago, I opened a text from my daughter. It was a short video of my 1 yr old grandson who has learned (much to his dismay) what the word “no” means.
He was chewing on his dad’s rubber watchband. I heard Amanda say no…and Isaac paused just a bit… and his little lip started to quiver. Then he looked over at his daddy and he heard another “no”… at that point his lip REALLY started to quiver! He reluctantly handed the watch to his dad, and then proceeded to cry like his heart was broken.
I watched the video several times, showed coworkers at work. It’s hilariously funny… but I got to thinking how it parallels to “us” sometimes.
When God says no. Or doesn’t answer a prayer the way we would have liked Him to answer it.
Ouch.
As I watched (for probably the 19th time!) little Isaac hand over the watch… but he wasn’t a bit happy about it.
His parents had good reason not to let him chew on it, they were worried the little clasp would come off and choke him. They knew what was best.
How many times does God answer our prayers in ways that we don’t understand or in ways that hurt. Do we trust Him enough to hand it over … and taking it a step further… to TRUST Him with the situation? Or are we tempted to complain or be bitter… or think our own solution is somehow best…
As I watched that video, I couldn’t help but think of this verse. “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

Let’s start this week out with praying together… 🙏

Lord, we don’t even pretend to understand your plan sometimes, but help all of us to trust You enough to hand every situation over to You, knowing that you have promised to work every situation out for our ultimate good. We praise you, even in the storms, for you are worthy. Help us to never lean on our own understanding, but on You. Amen.
