Although a spell of cooler August weather helped firefighters across the state subdue many of Oregon’s biggest wildfires in recent weeks, high winds could easily undo the progress.

A “red flag” warning for parts of Oregon means critical fire weather conditions, including high winds and low humidity, are either occurring now or about to occur across large swaths of the state.

“East winds are very common around this time of year, making now the time to prevent the next large wildfire,” Oregon Fire Protection Division Chief Chris Cline said in a statement Thursday. “There is still potential for more fire starts and the season isn’t over yet.”
