Judy Keegan remembers her close friend, Barbara Macdonald, who was asleep in her home when a plane crashed into it on Saturday, August 31. Macdonald had worked in a bank and was retired. She and husband Kent Walton had lived at the 190-home Fairview Terrace development for nearly two decades. Macdonald and Keegan were inseparable; many called them “Lucy and Ethel,” Keegan said. The two made sure things were in order at the complex clubhouse and pool and shopped together so frequently at Kohl’s that people thought they worked there. A few cool days may have slowed Oregon’s fire season, but the weather is about to shift again, giving more fuel to fires across the state. “We do still have active wildfires in the area around the Willamette Valley and northwestern Oregon,” said Jon Liu, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Portland, on Tuesday. Progress has definitely been made. As of Tuesday, 33 fires were burning 34,345 acres across the state, compared to over 1.1 million acres at the beginning of August. But the danger is not completely behind us. Among the still-active fires was the Copperfield Fire in Klamath County near Chiloquin, which had reached 3,656 acres and burned seven residences and several outbuildings as of Tuesday morning, according to Klamath County Emergency Management and the Oregon State Fire Marshal. A small plane crashed into a building of three-story condo units in Fairview near the Troutdale Airport Saturday morning, and three people are missing, according to the Gresham Fire Department. Initial reports are that two people were on board the plane, according to Gresham Fire Chief Scott Lewis. He said one resident is also missing. About 20 fire engines and ladder trucks from Gresham, Portland and Vancouver responded, Lewis said. Two condo units were initially on fire and it spread to a third and fourth. Growing up, Francisco Ochoa remembers selling his father’s homemade cheese door-to-door in Salem on the same streets behind where his 9,000-square-foot cheese creamery now sits. Today, that creamery produces the best string cheese in America, according to the American Cheese Society’s 2024 competition. Francisco’s father, Froylan Ochoa, had a dream of owning a commercial creamery where he could make traditional Mexican cheeses — a passion he had been pursuing at home since Francisco was young. “After he passed away, a year later, my older brother, with the help of an angel investor, was able to open the first creamery,” Francisco said. Several thousand Fred Meyer workers in the Portland area walked off the job early Wednesday, striking over alleged breaches of labor relations laws and amid contentious contract negotiations. It includes virtually all of Fred Meyer’s grocery and food workers, including cashiers, baggers, stockers, meat and bakery department workers and online order pickers — roughly 4,500 in all across the Portland area. Portland tattoo artists recreate areolas after cancer surgery

Lina Anderson, co-owner of Daela Cosmetic Tattoo , estimates she’s restored about 2,500 areolas, many for people who have undergone treatment for breast cancer. At Daela, Anderson doesn’t just recreate the look of areolas, she recreates the texture and even the nipple using shading to create a 3-D effect with her tattoos. Daela’s tattoos aren’t just for people recovering from mastectomies, Anderson said. The rumble of the air compressor in the kitchen of Portland’s Li Min Bakery & Bistro means one thing: It’s mooncake season.
