Alaska is one of the world’s last wild frontiers. Within the borders of the 49th state, some of the United States’ most remote mountain biking can be found. Late this past summer, riders Sam Schultz, Matt Monod, and Peter Ostroski set out to explore some of the region’s best terrain.

“Mountain biking is still in its infancy in Alaska or, perhaps, maybe its early teenage years,” writes Felix Burke in “Search for Nothing,” a newly released Freehub feature out today. “The best has yet to come in the area’s development. The community is driven, the purpose-built, sanctioned trails are fantastic and accessible, while trails being constructed by local builders have their own style of hike-a-bike-only access and rake-and-ride, fall-line riding that fits Alaska’s signature ‘I’ll do it myself’ mentality.”

Our review of the latest iteration of the Evil Wreckoning () is here!

"This is a bike for riders who want a long-travel enduro machine that’s nimble enough for technical terrain but comfortable and efficient enough for all-day pedaling," writes Freehub reviewer Spencer Astra (). "It’s perfect for big, bumpy descents but still lively enough to handle smaller, tighter trail systems."

Lookout Mountain, which tops out at 2,388 feet of elevation, stands tall as the dominant landmark on Chattanooga’s skyline. It also stands out as the place where mountain biking took hold in this part of Tennessee—a key launch point from which the city began its decades-long efforts to shed the image of a dirty industrial town and moved toward a brighter, cleaner, more active future.

In “Mecca in the Making,” Chattanooga’s mountain biking history is explored alongside critical partnerships that formed between riders and local officials. The result is a modern, bustling outdoor town with more than 100 miles of singletrack near the city center.

Check out the story of Chattanooga in Freehub’s latest release in our Pipeline film series.

Last Thursday, seven women stood proud as the first finishers of Rampage's new female category. Their individual triumphs were, no doubt, a result of countless hours of personal training and preparation, but teams of relentless diggers and industry advocates were also instrumental in each athlete's success.

“Rampage is, to me, the biggest event in mountain biking,” said Kiwi Robin Goomes, who won the event. “For so many years, we’ve all watched it and dreamed of being here so it’s a dream come true. I feel so blessed to be here."

Head to Freehub.com to read our coverage of this historic event, written by Nicole Formosa () and photographed by Katie Lozancich ().

Thursday's buzz was palpable as it echoed across the desert. And, as Kiwi rider Robin Goomes beamed atop a podium she shared with fellow competitors Georgia Astle and Casey Brown, a wild crowd gathered to celebrate not only the incredible riding they'd just witnessed, but also the shattering of one of competitive mountain biking's last glass ceilings.

"What a difference a year makes," writes veteran mountain bike journalist Nicole Formosa in her newly published piece about Thursday's historic event. "Almost exactly 12 months ago, the world’s best female freeride athletes were at the lowest point in their years-long quest to compete at Red Bull Rampage, the top competition in freeride mountain biking, held outside Virgin, Utah, on some of the biggest, most consequential terrain on earth. On Thursday, those emotions were finally replaced with elation, excitement, and hard-earned success."

Head to Freehub.com to read our full coverage of this historic event in Nicole's feature, "Desert Ascension."

Each summer, communities across Canada are experiencing record-breaking temperatures and diminishing rainfall. This trend has put increasing amounts of pressure on mountain bike event and race promoters, all of whom face an ever-expanding number of climate-related hurdles when it comes to hosting successful gatherings.

In a recent study from Thompson Rivers University, authors Courtney W. Mason and Pate Neumann wrote: "While the timing, availability, and demand for trail-based sport and recreation experiences are predicted to increase, research demonstrates that the visitor-related environmental pressures will become more severe with longer, drier, and hotter summers. According to a recent Environment and Climate Change Canada report, Canada is warming at a more rapid rate when compared to global averages.”

Hit the link or head to Freehub.com to read our featured article, "Racing the Climate," from our brand new 15.4 issue release. In it, journalist Matt Coté takes an in-depth look at how race promoters, trailbuilding nonprofits, and other stakeholders are coping with increasing climate strain across Canada.

Building mountain biking trails can bring a host of socioeconomic benefits to a community, especially in rural areas. But along size the many benefits, the rising cost of housing in these small trail towns is now making it tough for many locals to afford staying in their hometowns.

“Tourism-related housing pressures are nothing new—ski resort areas such as Aspen have struggled for decades to provide workforce housing. The difference now, says economist Megan Lawson, is that a town doesn’t need a multimillion-dollar ski resort to feel the housing squeeze; a good trail system can be enough to tip the scale,” writes in her article dissecting the state of housing in a few notable hubs for outdoor recreation—Aspen, Moab, and Knoxville.

What does it mean to return home unapologetically as yourself? “Coming Home” follows Alex Showerman, a lifelong Vermonter who spent her adult years in Waterbury mountain biking, trailbuilding, and advocating for her local trails. In 2020, she came out as a q***r, trans woman, which led her west to pursue a full-time career as a freeride mountain biker. But every time she returns to her roots in Vermont, she reconnects with the Green Mountain State through fresh eyes, finding a new appreciation for the place that shaped her.

In August of 2024, Alex returned home for another visit, but this time, with friends Brooklyn Bell and Hannah Bergemann in tow. Brooklyn and Hannah are two staples of the Pacific Northwest riding scene and have been mentors and sources of inspiration to Alex. "Coming Home" tells the story of an underrepresented athlete’s journey to make their mark in action sports and the world, while discovering the joy of finding their true community along the way.

Walk into the Tippie family household on any given day, and you’re likely to stumble upon bike helmets, ski boots, or a flurry of outdoor gear. But one thing you’re guaranteed to see is Alix Tippie, sitting in the living room, surrounded by towering stacks of her sketches, markers in hand, completely absorbed in her art.
“Artistic expression is clearly Alix’s strong suit,” writes Danielle Baker (.baker ) in her piece “Whatever Works.”

From a young age, given just a piece of paper and some markers, she could spend hours lost in drawing. With parents like Brett ( )and Sarah ( ), both with deep artistic roots in their families, Alix’s passion for art was no surprise. But her meticulous attention to detail and precision certainly was.

The latest review from Freehub is out now!

Spencer Astra reviews the Orbea Occam LT. Check out his thoughts:

"The Orbea Occam LT seems as if it was purpose-built for my natural riding style. I prefer a bike that can climb efficiently up steep terrain while also providing plenty of stability for the ride down, so the travel ranges of most modern trail or all-mountain bikes really appeals to me. The Occam LT falls happily in this category, with 150 millimeters of rear-wheel travel and a 160-millimeter fork up front—making it an ideal choice for riders who want a balanced mix of climbing efficiency and descending prowess. In addition, its sensible geometry and smart array of components make for a bike that can be both stable and lively when the situation demands."

The ability to make something complex seem simple is a sign of true mastery, whether in athletics, the arts, or everyday life. This is especially true when it comes to creating images, and in the world of mountain bike photography, has consistently shown a penchant for pushing the envelope.

The following is a collection of Liautard’s finest images, along with his thoughts on what inspired him to create them.
