Our favorite Czech Slavnosti issue of the year!! Read all about this year's contestants and the current Royal Court!

Don't miss the article about the pageant's updates to the kroj competition. Here is a brief summary of the story -
2022 brings the next evolution of the kroj category. Kroje will continue to be the cornerstone of the pageant and contestants will always appear in kroj. In this evolution, we are returning to one kroj category and we are judging on four themes. The four themes are accuracy, knowledge- the ability to describe or speak on kroje, relationship to family, and poise during kroj modeling. Here is what each theme represents-

Accuracy: The kroj should represent the region or town of the contestant's heritage. For example, if a kroj is from the Plzen region red tights are appropriate.

Knowledge: The queen must be able to speak and share her kroj in an interesting and concise presentation.

Family Relationship: The kroj should represent the contestant's family heritage. For example, if the contestant is Slovak then a Slovak kroj is appropriate.

Poise: The ability to present kroj confidently on stage.

A very exciting part of this new approach is that the pageant is expanding prizes to award one winner in each of the four theme categories. Therefore instead of two kroj winners, the judges will consider four potential winners. We believe this highlights the importance of Kroje.

This change comes in partnership with a committee of former queens and representatives from pageant states. The benefits of these changes include; an equal playing field – with two categories there are years where one category has significantly more contestants than the other. Another benefit is that we judge the characteristics of the queen and her kroj versus the kroj itself. As an organization, we want to keep the pageant fresh and evolving and we believe this update does just that.

Overall the pageant wants to honor our tradition and we feel these changes will keep kroj as the cornerstone of our work.

Thank you to all the volunteers who provided recommendations and dedicated time to this effort! We hope that you will join us for the 35th Anniversary pageant on August 6-7 to see the changes in action.
