Continuing his crusade against alleged ‘liberal indoctrination’ within Florida’s public institutions, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis unveiled a sweeping range of proposals geared at restructuring Florida’s higher education.

Policies referenced DeSantis’ rogue gallery of “divisive subjects” including prohibiting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion statements within hiring practices and public universities from supporting campus activities or programs related to DEI, or Critical Race Theory.

“What about the ongoing operations where you have a stewardship obligation, stewardship doesn’t seem to be a concept in the minds of these people,” said Breslin. “They’re political ideologues.”

“Dr. Bejar’s understanding of the dynamics of higher education administration alongside her ability to meet opportunities and challenges with confidence, integrity, and responsibility, are unparalleled,” said Jessell in the email.

The FIU Student Government Association, with the aid of the Graham Center, is providing free menstrual products in the womens’ restrooms as they work to make due on an initiative launched by the SGA Executive Board last fall.

SGA President Cristhofer Lugo said this plan was discussed by previous student administrations during the past few years, but didn’t gain traction until recently.

“I really put a lot of force into it, by doing more research, and looking for a company that was sustainable,” said Lugo. “This idea has been in the works for a while, but it finally pushed through.”’

FIU celebrated Juneteenth this past week for the second year in its history, observing it through a week of festivities, lectures, classes and events.

The theme of this year’s activities was “Educate, Celebrate, Heal.” This year’s Juneteenth Committee co-chair Laura Lopez-Ramos says the objective wasn’t to give people a day off, but rather a day on.

“We needed to raise awareness for Juneteenth, we needed to educate our community, and we needed a space to celebrate,” she said.

Events included the inaugural Nova Star Juneteenth Scholarship Pageant on June 11th, as well as the second annual Freedom Day Celebration, held on June 18th at the Earlene and Albert Dotson Family Pavilion.
