Meet the OTHER Salt River Bridge, the one that's carried State Route 288 traffic in Gila County since 1920.

This was one of the earliest bridges built after Arizona became a state. In 1918, the Bureau of Public Roads (a predecessor of the Federal Highway Administration) began scouting locations for a new road in the Tonto and Crook National Forest. The earth road would intersect with the Apache Trail near Roosevelt, and then 44 miles north to the town of Young. One of the new road's major components was a bridge over the Salt River, near the head of Roosevelt Lake. The design was completed in 1919 and the structure was up by the end of 1920.

The bridge features a long-span steel truss, know as a Parker truss, with footings set directly into the solid-rock shoreline, as well as a concrete deck flanked by steel pipe guardrails.

Although it's considered a remote crossing, the SR 288 Salt River Bridge is important in Arizona bridge history for three reasons:

1. It's the earliest documented example of a bridge constructed by the Bureau of Public Roads in Arizona;
2. It is the earliest and longest through-truss bridge still in its original location;
3. It's only one of four Parker trusses found in ADOT's statewide bridge inventory.

Another day, another round of showers and storms expected. Just like the past few days, activity will be widely scattered, so not everyone will get rain. Stronger storms will bring the threat of flash flooding, gusty winds, and hail.

โ€œGlobe, Arizona was founded as a mining town in 1876. Before its current incorporation in 1907, the city was incorporated twice prior. The name Globe is said to have come from a globe shaped nugget of pure silver found nearby. Although silver started the population boom, copper proved more abundant and led to the growth of the community. Due to its attractive location for distribution of mining products and ample supply of water, infrastructure and commerce were added to support mining activities. But mining came to a halt in the Globe District proper when the Old Dominion Mine flooded in the 1920โ€™s, evolving the city into support businesses for the mines and the major housing center in Cobre Valley.

Today, the economic base remains mining and ranching, with more than 20 percent of the employment in Globe and Miami being related to mining and the production of copper.

Globe is located in the heart of Arizona. Whether youโ€™re looking for the romance of Territorial history, Native American culture, small town friendly folks or limitless outdoor recreation, it all comes together here. Whatever it is that calls to you, it can be found in Globe-Miami.

With wonderful downtown buildings still intact, and historic cottages and homes perched on the hillsides, visitors can truly feel what life was like 100 years ago while still enjoying modern day amenities.โ€
