Hacking the Instagram algorithm is all about tapping into the psychology of your audience.

Great content is only great if it holds attention or drives action.

The way the algorithm works this out is by showing your post initially to a small group of your followers (about 5-8% according to industry stats). That's not a lot.

These are probably people who are most likely to engage with your content in the first place. So, maybe your friends, mom, or employees.

If they do engage with it, then the algorithm shows it to a few more of your followers.

Then it might show it to people who don't follow you yet. And if they also engage, it can keep rolling.

The mission on IG is working out ways to drive people to engage, or watch for longer.

Smart marketers use more than one source of data to gauge how well their business is doing. And even though marketing data seems to be everywhere, it's not uncommon to overvalue easy-to-find metrics and undervalue hard-to-find metrics. For instance, Social metrics are easy to find but those metrics offer low impact to your business and the reaching of your goal, which is often sales of some form. Follower size, likes, comments and shares are so easy to see, and they may be skewing your marketing strategies. They simply don't correlate much with business impact. People who will never be a customer or client of yours could just really like your posts or videos for entertainment purposes.

In contrast, conversion rates per channel (e.g., social, web, email, search ads) are hard to find but the data can offer a high impact to your marketing decisions. Can you identify which visitors from which traffic source are most likely to take action? Do you know what actions they take (e.g., request for quote, ask for directions, complete an application)? This data is a bit harder to find, because it requires professional setup in tools like Google Analytics 4. But it can have a dramatic impact on your marketing strategy.

That's probably true for a lot of things, and we're just talking about digital marketing here. We meet with clients that sometimes say things like "I think so and so is really killing it, let's do it like them". And we have to remind them that our goal will be to get the same or better results, but we're probably not going to be doing things exactly like them.

A good plan, for any sized business, involves a strategy that identifies who you're talking to (that's your target persona) and then creating content that will make that audience think "oh yeah, they really get it".

If you're in the industry of selling services, and your competitor is selling to men 40 and up, and you're selling to women in their 20's, those marketing efforts and tone of voice are going to be really different. Most of the time, the differences with your competitors are a little more subtle than that, but the sentiment stays the same. What works for some, doesn't work for all. And if you just start attacking marketing without a plan and a strategy, you're definitely going to be wasting money (and time).

Work with a partner who has experience asking the right questions to help you identify who your true target persona is. You'll know you've gotten it right if you can give that persona a name and they feel like a real person to you.

Whether you're running Social Ads, relying on content marketing or organic social reach, or maybe just search engine optimization, you want to know if what you're doing is working, right?

That's where Google Analytics 4 helps make that possible.

Let's say, for example, you're running a Facebook ad and you want people, once they click on your ad, to complete a form. Of course you'll know when they do that, because you'll get the form in your inbox. But will you know how many people visited the page and Didn't complete the form? Understanding how many visitors are and are not converting will help you understand if you should or shouldn't make changes to what you're doing.

Here's a little formula for how we do this:

𝐖𝐞𝐛𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞:

✔️ Create a Thank-You Page that people are taken to once they complete the form on your site.

𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝟒:

✔️ Use Google Analytics to Create two Events (one for when they hit your landing page, and one for when they make it to your Thank you page)

✔️ Make each of those Events a Conversion so they can be tracked

𝐈𝐧 𝐆𝐀𝟒 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬:

✔️ Navigate to Traffic Acquisition

✔️ Customize the report to show the following metrics: Users, Sessions, Engagement Rate, Session Conversion Rate, Average Engagement per Session, Event Count, Conversions

✔️ Under session conversion rate, you'll be able to see the metrics for all events or just the events you custom created to give you amazing insights to how your Ad (or other efforts) is actually converting.

Are you ditching Twitter for Threads?

You've probably heard of Threads by now, Meta's newest social app, which some are referring to as a rival to Twitter.

Here's what we know so far:

The great thing is that you can create a Threads account just by downloading the App and using your existing IG username. It asks if you want to import you Instagram Bio, and even keep following the accounts you already follow on IG. Sweet.

Like Twitter, Threads functions as a text-based conversation app with a slick clean design. It supports links, images, and videos, allowing you to share various types of content. The maximum length for each post is set at 500 characters.

According to Forbes, Threads is now the fastest-growing app in history—with more than 100 Million users in just five days of its launch (that overtakes ChatGBT's records). It will be interesting to see how it makes its way in the social ecosystem.

Our Story

Hi! I’m Kari and the founder of Studio Barn Creative. I was born and raised in southern New Jersey and have been creative in some way since I can remember, probably because my mother was a fantastic artist who could draw anything by hand and I always thought that was pretty cool. Magic like.

I started my own designing eons ago (in the 90’s), in a small walk-up apartment in New Jersey-- a 15 minute drive to Philadelphia. I had my first son and was kind of scrambling to get my bearings as an adult. The inspiration to design for others was born from the idea of trying to impress my boss at the time by being able to make a simple Microsoft Word document less Word-like. I don’t remember what that document ended up looking like, but it worked. And I got the bug to keep designing for other people. It is safe to say that things have changed quite a bit. In 2000, I started making my way down South. By 2005, I had a license to design for other people (a business license).
