"If publishers were being truthful about their 'New Year, New You' books, they'd all have the same title: 'Eight Great Habits That Won’t Last a Week.' But that's OK," Judith Newman writes. "Many of us really do look forward to beginning the New Year with a bit of a tuneup. Or at least trying to. Here are a couple of great places to start."

Our columnist has recommendations.

President Trump said while hosting President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine at Mar-a-Lago on Sunday that he believed Russia and Ukraine were “maybe very close” to ending a nearly four-year war.

But a joint U.S.-Ukraine proposal appeared unfinished, as Russia rejected several ideas.

The Virginia man arrested this month on charges of placing two pipe bombs in Washington on the night before a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, has given a detailed confession, according to court papers released Sunday.

A Virginia man was charged with planting the bombs outside Democratic and Republican headquarters. Court documents show he believed that the 2020 election had been “tampered with.”

It didn’t get any easier to afford a home in 2025, but week after week, we followed the stories of homeowners who, through a variety of means, made their home-buying dreams reality. Among the apartments, bungalows, rowhouses and all the structures in between, these are the Hunts that stuck with us.

This year, the Hunt followed home buyers in 17 states and three countries outside the United States, with a median home price of $596,000.

Thirty miles from Salt Lake City in Utah’s Wasatch Mountains, the former silver-mining hub turned sporty mecca of Park City is already well known to the skiers who tackle the slopes at sprawling Park City Mountain Resort, the country’s biggest ski area, and Deer Valley, known for its luxurious amenities. The big news: Deer Valley has more than doubled its terrain, adding more than 2,000 acres of skiing and a new base village in the first phase of the resort’s largest-ever expansion. Plus, a new 10-passenger gondola now whisks skiers up from the Canyons Village base area at Park City Mountain. But there’s more than outdoor enjoyment: Although this January will be the last year that Park City will host the Sundance Film Festival, a thriving cultural scene offers year-round performances, exhibitions and films.

More than 2,000 acres of new ski area add to the allure of this sporty mecca with a thriving cultural scene.

For years Kate Hudson was pigeonholed as a rom-com star. But in “Song Sung Blue,” her character, Claire, transcends her movie-of-the-week attributes — so much so that Hudson could land in the best actress race at the Academy Awards. She has already been nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance. https://nyti.ms/4bbrpdr

In recent decades, California’s San Luis Obispo County — or SLO, as both the city and county are called — has quietly evolved from an agricultural backwater into something resembling its celebrity neighbors, Santa Barbara and Big Sur. As wineries and boutique hotels have sprouted along its backroads and once-sleepy main streets, this Central Coast county — halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles — has become a destination in its own right.

The passage of Proposition 50, which redrew California’s congressional map, means that all of the state’s conservative north is likely to be represented by Democrats. “I don’t think people that were born and raised in the cities can represent us to the same extent,” one farmer said. https://nyti.ms/4aB8kRS

“I never predicted that a fringe conspiracy theorist like Mr. Kennedy would one day become leader of the health care system, but it doesn’t surprise me,” writes Dr. Benjamin Mazer.

So much in public health has changed.

“In towns like mine, outsourcing and automation consumed jobs. Then purpose. Then people,” writes Brian Groh. “Now the same forces are climbing the economic ladder. Yet Washington remains fixated on global competition and growth, as if new work will always appear to replace what’s been lost.”

I was now facing the same reality my working-class neighbors knew well: the world had changed, my work had all but disappeared, and still, the bills wouldn’t stop coming.

The ski runs above the mountain town of Telluride, Colorado, sat eerily empty on Saturday. Chair lifts hung as motionless as icicles. Tourists slumped beside outdoor fire pits, trying not to think about the money they had spent on ski vacations upended by a labor dispute.

Now, vacationers looking to ski are wondering what to do and merchants are hoping it doesn’t last.

“You cannot change the conditions of modern life, but you are the sovereign ruler of what enters your personal space,” writes Angela Duckworth. “Draw close what you want more of, push away what you want less.”

Rather than try to resist temptation in the moment, many successful people arrange their lives to minimize the need for willpower in the first place.

Fom Syria to Lebanon and Israel to Gaza, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed or wounded in more than a decade of wars in the Middle East. Among some in the region, exhausted by conflict, a quiet resolve is forming to find another way.

The blueprint covers a broad range of issues, including territory, security guarantees and postwar reconstruction. But Russia has indicated little willingness to end the war.
