All highways closed in northeastern Kansas
Low visibility, impassable conditions and extreme winter weather today, Jan. 5, 2025, has caused highways to be closed in northeastern Kansas, including Interstate 70 east to the Missouri state line, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.

I-70 is now closed in both direction from the Missouri state line in Kansas City west to the Ellsworth County line in western Kansas. Eastbound I-70 is also closed from Hays to the Missouri state line.

In addition, all highways are now closed in Osage, Marshall, Nemaha, Brown, Doniphan, Riley, Pottawatomie, Jackson, Atchison, Wabaunsee, Shawnee, Jefferson, Leavenworth, Lyon, Douglas, Wyandotte and Johnson counties.

These closures are in addition to the closures that took place in north central Kansas earlier this afternoon. Those include all highways in Washington, Clay, Geary, Dickinson, Morris, Marion, Chase, McPherson, Saline, Ellsworth, Lincoln, Ottawa, Mitchell, Republic, Cloud and Jewell counties.

Additional road closures are possible as the winter storm continues to move across the state.

KDOT advises motorists who must travel to have emergency kits on hand with clothes, blankets, food, water and other supplies.

28/10/2024

Osage County Emergency Management has issued a burn ban today, Monday, Oct. 28, 2024, for the entire county due to high wind gusts and warm temperatures. Osage County and northeast Kansas are under very high fire danger, while the National Weather Service has placed south central and central Kansas under a red flag warning today. The high fire danger is expected to continue into Tuesday, as the wind gusts continue.

During Osage County’s burn ban, no outside burning is allowed and all county burn permits are suspended. Under conditions of high fire danger, fires start quickly, spread furiously and burn intensely. All fires are potentially serious. All outdoor burning should be avoided in areas with high fire danger.

Warm and windy weather is forecast for Monday and Tuesday, with today’s high near 88, south wind of 15 to 20 mph, and gusts as high as 35 mph.
