WOLVES AVENGE ONLY LOSS TO EARN FIRST CCMSAL FOOTBALL TITLE IN A DECADE
Lee Middle School's football team avenged its only loss of the 2024 season in a rematch against Smokey Road in Wednesday's CCMSAL Football Championship in a close 24-8 decision at East Coweta High that went down to the final five minutes of play.
Wolves standout Jaccori Payton came up with big plays in all three phases, starting with an 88-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Harper Messiah to put the Wolves on the scoreboard in the second quarter while holding on to an 8-0 lead heading into halftime.
Payton then opened the third quarter with a 75-yard kickoff return, putting Lee ahead by two scores.
Payton added an interception and two fumble recoveries, the latter of which came in the end zone on a mad scramble with Smokey Road looking to potentially tie the game from the Lee 3-yard-line, trailing 16-8.
Instead, Payton scooped up a loose ball and raced 80-plus yards the other way to set up the Wolves' final score, which put the game away with less than 3:59 left.
Lee, led by head coach Nicolas Benson and assistants Mark Lewis, Euseph Messiah, Malcolm Massey and Shaun Dailey, finished a 7-1 campaign by winning its final five games and earning the No. 1 seed in the playoffs in a tiebreaker.
Smokey Road finished a 6-2 season with a runner-up finish a year after missing the CCMSAL playoffs. The Wildcats defeated Lee 16-12 in the teams' regular-season meeting on Oct. 16.

It was a "Christmas" theme for Newnan High's student section, and the Cougars' shutout victory over Tri-Cities in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs certainly made the home crowd at Drake Stadium feel all warm and fuzzy.
Newnan scored on its first six possessions, taking advantage of two Bulldogs turnovers. The program snapped a string of five first-round playoff exits for its first postseason victory since 2015 while now advancing to face Region 6-5A champion Sprayberry (10-1) on Nov. 22 in Marietta.

Newnan’s senior class will get its first taste of the GHSA state football playoffs on Friday when they host Tri-Cities in the first round of the Class 5A tournament.
The Cougars join East Coweta (6A) and Trinity Chrisitan (3A-A Private) in advancing to the postseason. Teams had an extra week off because the GHSA rescheduled the first round to accommodate makeup games.
All three schools take momentum into the playoffs following victories in regular-season finales on Nov. 1.
Northgate also wrapped up its first season under head coach Kevin Whitley while laying the foundation for the future.
All-Region honors in 2-6A (East Coweta) and 3-5A (Newnan, Northgate) were also released this week.

Just before the end of a long, challenging two final games of softball, East Coweta was asked to take a breath in the toughest of moments against Buford and stay calm with a 4-3 lead and a state championship on the line during an intense seventh inning after losing a previous walk-off decision.

The Lady Indians held on and closed a 37-1 season with a GHSA Class 6A state softball title, the program's fourth since 2017.

Physics, be darned. East Coweta found a way to prove an immovable object can indeed stop an unstoppable force on the softball field when it came to nemesis Buford. Brent wants to say…” thank you to everybody that has been praying for me, recovery is going well, I appreciate the support, I will be home soon, love y’all.”
