SpaceX's huge Super Heavy-Starship rocket, by far the most powerful ever built, was primed for launch on its third test flight Thursday, an attempt to boost the unpiloted upper stage into space for a sub-orbital hop to a controlled re-entry and splashdown in the Indian Ocean.

Liftoff from SpaceX's Boca Chica, Texas, flight test facility on the Gulf Coast planned for 8:24 a.m. EDT, kicking off an eight-and-a-half-minute climb to space.

The flight follows formal clearance from the Federal Aviation Administration, issued late Wednesday, that concluded "SpaceX met all safety, environmental, policy and financial responsibility requirements." - CBS News

There's much more than rings orbiting Saturn. 🪐

Saturn is home to a vast array of intriguing and unique worlds. From the haze-shrouded surface of Titan to crater-riddled Phoebe, each of Saturn's moons tells another piece of the story surrounding the Saturn system.

As of June 8, 2023, Saturn has 146 moons in its orbit, with others continually awaiting confirmation of their discovery and official naming by the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

With 2 days leading up to the new year, we're sharing our second most-liked Webb image of 2023.

Shown here is spiral galaxy M51 as seen by Webb's mid-infrared instrument. The gravity of this galaxy's neighbor, the dwarf galaxy NGC 5195, is thought to be partially responsible for those prominent and distinct spiral arms!

Tonight at 11pm ET:

From SpaceX:
SpaceX is targeting Friday, November 17 for a Falcon 9 launch of 23 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Liftoff is targeted for 11:00 p.m. ET, with backup opportunities available until 2:59 a.m. ET on Saturday, November 18. If needed, additional opportunities are also available on Saturday, November 18 starting at 11:00 p.m. ET.

A live webcast of this mission will begin on X about five minutes prior to liftoff. Watch live.

This is the 11th flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched CRS-24, Eutelsat HOTBIRD 13F, OneWeb 1, SES-18 and SES-19, and six Starlink missions. Following stage separation, the first stage will land on the Just Read the Instructions droneship, which will be stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

From SpaceX:
The second flight test of a fully integrated Starship is set to launch Saturday, November 18. A twenty-minute launch window opens at 7:00 a.m. CT.

A live webcast of the flight test will begin about 35 minutes before liftoff, which you can watch here and on X . As is the case with all developmental testing, the schedule is dynamic and likely to change, so be sure to stay tuned to our X account for updates.

Starship’s first flight test provided numerous lessons learned that directly contributed to several upgrades to both the vehicle and ground infrastructure to improve the probability of success on future flights. The second flight test will debut a hot-stage separation system and a new electronic Thrust Vector Control (TVC) system for Super Heavy Raptor engines, in addition to reinforcements to the pad foundation and a water-cooled steel flame deflector, among many other enhancements.

This rapid iterative development approach has been the basis for all of SpaceX’s major innovative advancements, including Falcon, Dragon, and Starlink. Recursive improvement is essential as we work to build a fully reusable transportation system capable of carrying both crew and cargo to Earth orbit, help humanity return to the Moon, and ultimately travel to Mars and beyond.

Liftoff is scheduled for 10:19 a.m. ET today (Oct. 13)!
The Falcon Heavy is scheduled to launch the Psyche spacecraft today at 10:19 a.m. EDT (1419 GMT) from Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. That assumes Mother Nature cooperates, which is certainly no guarantee on the stormy Space Coast; current forecasts predict just a 40% chance of weather good enough for launch.
